UC Riverside/SJSU/ASU Barrett

Hi fellow parents,

My son got into the above 3 colleges for computer science engineering. ASU offers $13K for maintaining 3.0 GPA. We did not get any scholarship from the other 2. I heard that SJSU is heavily impacted and it easily takes 5 years to finish the degree. We are so confused. We took a tour of Barrett and my son liked it. We are from Southern California. We will be visiting other colleges soon. Please provide your experience/suggestion. Thanks.

Isn’t Barrett one of the top honors colleges in the US? Would definitely choose that over SJSU which (from what I’ve read) has an abysmal graduation rate. I’ve only been on the UCR campus once- I wasn’t terribly impressed. Of course, this was 20 years ago so it could have changed…which is better for his major?

Many CSUs have four year pledge programs:

SJSU specifically:

How does net price compare at each?

I think that your choice may be clearer after your visits.
One thing that the ASU/Barrett offer has that the others don’t are the advantages and perks of the Honors program. One of those advantages is being surrounded by other equally motivated students, and the other main advantage I see is more support when having to deal with the public school bureaucracy than at the UC/CSU’s.

That said, all good choices.
Best of luck.

Thank you all.

SJSU - around $29K
UCR - $35K
ASU - $33K

4 year pledge program looks good.
