UC Santa Cruz 2023 Applicant Discussion Thread

My son is an “S” last name and heard yesterday so not sure about the alphabetical thing… hmmm

To all who haven’t heard: my son was accepted last night OOS… 3.4 unweighted, 3.6 weighted… 33 ACT w 11 writing… no ECs, no volunteer, no sports, essays were good but nothing extremely unique… so dont give up or get bummed! These are the lowest stats I have seen posted on here- so guys - anything is possible!! :))

ucsc notifies students about admissions in alphabetical order starting in March. Early decisions are different.

Do not fret about getting accepted. UCSC over-admits anyways, which contributes to the horrible housing crisis we’re suffering through. As long as you have an average gpa you have a good chance of getting accepted.

Also if you got any questions about UCSC, whether the lifestlye here, what college to live in or even SIR costs, let me know!

@Gumbymom okay, so do you think were the ones released yesterday not done by last name? and do you think they will resume the last-name pattern come March 1 at 12:00 AM? My last name is a high A so I assume I will get then if you are correct…

I believe last year the early admits came out over two days and then stopped. The early admits looked to be random, so not sure if those were alphabetical or not. Then, the big wave of releases is in mid March (3/15 last year), by last name, announced in advance as to what time applicants could expect to hear. Although, last year it looked like they didn’t necessarily follow the timeline they provided and also had an issue with the site crashing during the release. People who had three emails on their portal were accepted and people with one message were waitlisted or declined.

We’re middle of the alphabet - to add to the tea leaves.

@sammygrammy. As @collegemom111111 stated, last year all the regular admits heard Mid-March by alphabetical last name and the date and order was posted on the student portal. Early admits were notified over a 2 day period in February. Every year some of the UC’s change their decision timeline so it is always difficult to guess when decisions are going to be posted unless each UC states a specific date on the portals.

D accepted OOS 4.1ish UC GPA 1370 SAT. Letter S last name.

@gumbymom Do you think that these early acceptances are targeted at the highest stat applicants, or is UCSC (and other UCs who have similar practices, for that matter) being strategic and trying to attract/excite students who they believe would genuinely, seriously consider attending? In other words, would they look at a high stat applicant and assume that applicant will ultimately be accepted to, and attend, another UC, so why “waste” an early acceptance on him/her? I guess this is a question primarily about to what extent they care about yield, but also about strategy in general.

@Gumbymom okay. so are you saying that, if last year’s way is also this year, that the order based on alphabetical last names will be posted on the portal on March 1? because my portal doesn’t have the order or anything

Hello everyone, I’m new to the group and my son is also still waiting. I have some inside information from someone I know at UCSC. The acceptances from yesterday was just the early admits. The big pool of acceptances are coming out 3/15. Don’t panic, just keep waiting.

@sammygrammy

You will get an email like this probably tomorrow

From last year:

"As the admissions notification date approaches, I highly encourage you to check your access to the MyUCSC portal at my.ucsc.edu, where you will be able to view your admissions decision on March 15, 2018, according to the following schedule based on the first letter of your last name (all times below are Pacific Daylight Time):

A - C beginning at 12:00 a.m.
D - G beginning at 1:00 a.m.
H - K beginning at 2:00 a.m.
L - N beginning at 3:00 a.m.
O - S beginning at 4:00 a.m.
T - Z beginning at 5:00 a.m.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a few moments now to log in and make sure that your UCSC CruzID and CruzID Gold Password work. Then you will be ready to view your decision on March 15 at your specified time, or later when it is more convenient. Your admission decision will be displayed through April 30."

Why are people speculating something will happen tomorrow? Last year it wasn’t until the 15th.

@collegemom111111 the only thing you should expect to happen tomorrow is people getting an email with the information I stated above, letting applicants know the schedule for decisions. It will probably be tomorrow since that’s how it was last year and since UC general admissions happen during March.

If you have not been accepted already, you will definitely know by the 15th.

@slugwithtea Can you share details about the current housing crisis you mentioned and how/if it’s being addressed?

D accepted yesterday.

@collegemom111111 - although these stats are useful for gauging an idea of what is ‘most likely’ to be an accepted student, you can’t really compare too much as there are so many variables that come into play. My D had much higher stats than some of the kids accepted at UC Irvine a couple of weeks ago into the CHP program over there and hasn’t heard anything. She would like Irvine to be her first choice, but if they aren’t interested in her, she’s going to have to consider somewhere else and she appreciates the fact that UCSC has shown an early interest in her.

S accepted yesterday Bioengineering

In-state
4.34 w
4.0 uw
1430
very good EC’s, “ok” insight questions

A number of kids from school got acceptance notices yesterday including three from his Tennis team (none playing tennis in college). Last names ranged from A to W.

@collegemom111111: I agree with @scratchy903 that each UC campus is looking for a diverse student body and will look for students the fit their criteria. Maybe there is some yield protection?? but looking at the stats from the applicants that have been already accepted early, it does not seem very likely. Your D will end up where she is meant to be and I have found this true for my son’s, nieces and nephews I have helped though the CSU/UC admission process. They will “bloom where planted”.

@slugwithtea I do! Where to live? Can you describe the 10 dorms and give a general vibe to each?
