UC Scout vs. Community College

Our student dropped Spanish 3 and said it was because she had not learned anything from Spanish 1 and 2. We thought she could take Spanish 1 free through UC Scout, but now I see the class started in June and does not end until October 2020. Does this mean she should enroll in Spanish in the Spring for Community College? It would take up 6 units of the 11 she gets for free, and she was already planning on taking 11 units (an English class, an Art History Class, a class on Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science, and two P.E. classes). Should we just drop idea of returning to Spanish altogether?

You need to check the requirements to where she wants to go to school. Some colleges require at least 3 years of a foreign language, many require 2 years.

UCs and CSUs require LOTE (language other than English) to HS year 2 or equivalent proficiency, but UCs recommend HS year 3. In many cases, UCs have a graduation requirements that are higher than the admission requirements.

College LOTE courses move faster than HS LOTE courses, so be sure to check equivalency and which level is her correct placement.

Even if she goes over the free 11 units, the in-state tuition at a California community college is $46 per semester unit or $31 per quarter unit, so not a huge amount if you are not a low income family.

Just as an fyi, the scout language class was pretty easy. I took spanish 3.

How did you prepare for the midterm and the final? My ds is taking french through UC Scout now and isn’t sure how to best prepare for the midterm and final.
