UC Statewide Guarantee for top 9% of CA high school students

What about taking a gap year to work or self study, and start the application process over again fresh next year? Might have a different/better outcome?

We are considering all options, including deferring a year. I don’t think he wants to go through the whole app process again, with no guarantee that the outcome will be any better. If he does a gap year he’d probably just commit to one of his OOS options in hand and then defer. Or he could do CC and try to transfer, but he’s not keen on that either. No great options that he’s excited about, unfortunately : (

I’m so sorry. That’s got to be frustrating and disappointing. I hope he will find a path that he feels good about. :crossed_fingers:

@Gumbymom maybe you can chime in on this?

It’s may be that my son doesn’t get into any of the UC’s he’s applied for. He’s only been WL’ed or rejected and only UCSB and UCB are left.

In-state 3.93/4.25 Chemistry… not getting into a UC is going to be a hard pill to swallow.

If he doesn’t get into UCSB or UCB, how quickly is he offered the opportunity for the “guarantee”? Do we need to reach out to someone to enact this, or is it automatic? Hopefully it will be somewhat timely in order to get into the decision making process.

I’ve heard the only UC that he would possibly be offered is UCMerced. He hasn’t considered that school previously as it isn’t in the top 100 for Chemistry… it’s #274 in one ranking. Another downside to this school is location. My son is susceptible to migraines and heat is a trigger and it can get HOT in Merced. UCSC would probably be better. I don’t know why, but my son didn’t apply there.

He has also been WL’ed and accepted at some OOS schools, but the cost of those will probably be out of reach (still waiting on financial aid breakdown).

Unfortunately, it may be that he goes to a local JC then transfers…

ELC Campus referral is automatic and the default campus is UC Merced. UCM will contact the referred applicants via the Count me in program. This should happen in Early April. Last year it was around April 8th.

@Gumbymom thank you for the prompt reply…

You say “default” campus… is there a possibility of another campus or any way to specify a preference, especially given the health consideration?

I have not seen any other UC campuses that have accepted referrals other than UC Merced in the last few years. You might want to consider filing an appeal based on his health issues instead to the campuses that denied him.

@Gumbymom good point. Actually, UCDavis offered him WL and he has to write a 200 word statement to get on the WL, so maybe he includes that in his statement.
