UC Top 9

So if I make the UC top 9 thing where they guarantee a spot and I don't make it to even Riverside. If I didn't apply to Merced will they still take me since I qualified?

The short answer is “Yes”, sort of.

The top nine thing is one of two things: either the statewide path or eligibility in the local context (ELC).

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/california-residents/admissions-index/

This is what it says (note the “if space is available”):

“If you’re in the top 9 percent of California high school graduates and aren’t admitted to any of the UC campuses you apply to, you’ll be offered a spot at another campus if space is available.”

Yes to Merced. That was my daughter’s friends’ experience.

Why not apply to Merced directly?
The whole top 9 thing is ‘space permitting’ meaning, no guarantee.
