I applied for financial aid at some of the UC's, but i did not receive any form of the Cal Grant--which is strange since I have a very low income and a 3.85 UW and 4.3 W...
So far, I've been admitted to Davis and Irvine, but I hope to get into LA or Berkeley.
Are there any other forms of grants (not including scholarships) that are awarded to students in the UC system? I'm just really confused about what financial aid entails, since it is the only way I will be able to afford college.

P.S. I'm trying to avoid taking out ANY loans, and I would like to have minimal work-study.

ALSO: my UC Davis financial aid status states that they haven't received my FAFSA...but I definitely sent it in. What should I do?

You need to find out why you didn’t get a Cal Grant (assuming that you’re a Calif resident).

If you are a low income Calif resident, and you get into a UC, then you’ll get the Blue and Gold promise. The grants will cover at least UC tuition. However, the pkgs that I’ve seen lately for 0 EFC kids are about $20k of grants (UC grants, Cal Grants, and Pell Grants), and the rest of the aid is loans and work study.

Unless your family pays the difference or you get some good sized merit scholarships, you will likely have about $6-7k in loans and about $2k in work study. The UCs expects students to pay for some of their education. There isn’t enough money to provide totally free “sleep away” educations.

Why do you want minimal work study?

You need to find out about your FAFSA with Davis.

Simple questions: When did you submit FAFSA? When was your high school transcript submitted? Did you get notification that you were denied a Cal Grant, or have you simply gotten no notification at all?

@mom2collegekids My family can contribute up to 10k, so I don’t think i’ll need to deal with any loans (maybe some work study). Thank God! Hmm…I meant that I don’t want to be shuffling jobs in between my classes, but I will definitely work a little bit.
I’m going to contact Davis about it tomorrow–I think it’s because there is another step to the FAFSA. My dad got an email yesterday stating that we need to confirm our tax returns, maybe that was the problem.

@Dodgersmom I submitted the FAFSA in late January, so way before the deadline. Yes, I got the notification that I was denied a Cal Grant. My high school transcript was never submitted because the UC’s don’t require you to send them until you commit.

If you create an account and log on here <a href=“CSAC - Student Landing Home”>CSAC - Student Landing Home; , it will tell you why you did not receive a Cal Grant. Some examples would be, “Income over ceiling,” “Assets over Ceiling,” “GPA verification missing” etc.

Huh??? GPA verification needed to be submitted by March 2 in order for you to be eligible for Cal Grants! You’re going to need to appeal the denial, and explain why the GPA verification wasn’t submitted on time.

Im out of state (Washington) and I was recently admitted to UCSD and UCSB (still waiting on UCLA and UCB). I received a $4,295 pell grant from the government and a $16,000 grant from the colleges. Just as @mom2collegekids stated, I got about 20K in all. Our income is about 70,000 gross and 31,000 after taxes.

The UCs award grants separate from the Cal Grant. In general they are called, “UCSB Grant” or “UCSD Grant.” Bear in mind that luc425 will pay oos rates, and so will still need to pay ~$35,000/year to attend even after the $20,000 in aid.

This is true. That is why I have found scholarships in other places (there are many out there). Lucky for me I received a full ride scholarship from the military, so the extra financial aid from the school is an added bonus.

@alamemom Thank you! My income/assets were over the ceiling @dodgersmom Sorry, I don’t think we understood each other correctly. I submitted the GPA Verification form–I was referring to the transcripts you have to send to a UC once you are committed to it. @luc425 I haven’t received any financial aid report from the UC’s yet! They all say that they haven’t received my FAFSA, but I submitted it in January… @leafblade1354 I received my notification by email on March 7. Maybe it was in your spam folder?

dancer are you sure you submitted your FAFSA? Sometimes you fill in the information but if you dont “save” it, it does not get sent when you push “send”. If it wasn’t saved or “submitted” then the schools wouldn’t have a record of your submission. You need to double check this because the schools should have received something by now.

@auntbea I’m positive I submitted it–although my dad was in charge of filling it out for me. The problem is that my parents are both out of the country for the next two weeks–how will I solve this?
UC Irvine has received my FAFSA but has not reported anything to me yet. How long does it usually take?
Also, UCSB gave me a lot of money–but I’m confused as to why UC Davis hasn’t received my FAFSA. I need to call the financial aid office ASAP.

Dancer, my dd attends Davis, it took awhile last year to get info from them. The FA letter came weeks after the admission information. We’re full pay anyway, so it didn’t really matter, but we were curious if she would receive anything for merit scholarships.

Call the FA office/or email and see if they have the correct spelling of your name. You should have a PIN for your FAFSA application and your parents should also have written their pin in their rolodex file or on their computer. Ask them if they know where it is and doublecheck your info that it was sent to Davis by your parents.
