Uc tag confusion

For the requirements for the tag for uci, i found that their 3.4 gpa for all subsequent term requirement quite ambiguous. Do they mean that my overall gpa must remain 3.4 or that each term has to be at least 3.4? I have heard conflicting information.

Difficult and good question. Language is a tricky thing.

From the UCI TAG website: “• has earned a minimum GPA of 3.4 in all UC-transferable coursework by the end of the summer 2015 for fall 2016 admission and will maintain GPA of 3.4 in all UC-transferable coursework for all subsequent terms”

key words: maintain GPA of 3.4 in all UC-transferable coursework for all subsequent terms

Essentially, you have to maintain the 3.4 overall GPA. If you get a 3.3 one semester, but that brings you to a 3.5 overall GPA, you are okay.

I think. It seems that the “all UC-transferable coursework” has jurisdiction over the subsequent terms. It’s saying you need to keep a 3.4 in ALL coursework - so you need to keep your cumulative GPA under a 3.4.

I would be surprised to hear differently, but I could be incorrect. I don’t think I am, though.

I don’t think it could be “for all subsequent terms, maintain a 3.4 GPA in all coursework” because that would be very much against our intuitions of how the English language works. It would be talking like Yoda, essentially.

Oh, goodness, imagine how confusing this would be if Yoda said it. Yoda the admissions officer. :open_mouth:

Thank you very much. That’s what i think too because of how my friend’s provisional admission from tag 2014 requires him to keep an overall gpa of 3.4. I wish they would have maybe put the word overall in that statement to make it more clear.

I interpret subsequent terms as meaning each term, which is different than “cumulative GPA through [insert time period].”

So, FWIW, I read that as 3.4 each term. Otherwise I think it would have said 3.4 in all transferable coursework by end of spring.

The wording is very different than every other mention of a cumulative count (and there are many) - all of which follow an identical word pattern.

You better check.

I know someone that applied last year and got rejected for TAG because he got under a 3.4 his fall semester but his cumulative was still above 3.4. So i believe you need to atleast earn a 3.4 each term if taking classes. Im not taking classes so i guess im fine…

Oh god maybe i shouldnt take any classes in the spring because i might end up with a 3.375… but i feel that they are more leninent for the spring term because they already accepted you.

This was my friend’s provisional. They were quite nice with his i guess.

    2014 and maintain a minimum overall 3.4 GPA through the end of spring 2015;

It looks like your friend had something else wrong with their application.
