So I went to UCSC about 2 years ago in 2011 and did bad, left the school my freshmen year with a 2.3 overall GPA and 1.9 for the last quarter (ie put me in academic probation). So I attended a local CC for the next 2 years and TAG'd for Irvine (I had no idea I left the school with my last quarter on academic probation, I thought I at least passed with a 2.0) and so the TAG failed. Now I'm applying for Cal Poly Pomona Winter 2014 term on a non-impacted major. I just checked today and it said my status was "Not Admissible" even though I fulfilled every requirement. I emailed them and they just said to talk and schedule a counselor meeting with them to discuss. My question is, is my academic probation from UCSC the affecting factor? Or is it something else? I would believe the requirement "Good standing at the last college attended" would mean my academic standing at my local CC right now's academic standing (which is about a 3.7)... Anyone encounter this before? I had missed a payment deadline for CPP but the admissions said it wasn't the missed deadline but "something else" (then the whole schedule-a-counselor-meeting thing)... laskejfalse what a rollercoaster my transfer experience has been...

I was in a similar situation like you. I went to UCSC back in 2010, did bad, and was put on probation. Why don’t you go back to UCSC? 3.7 GPA is more than enough to get reinstated.

Edit: PM or update what happened to that CPP “Not admissible” thing. I’m also applying to few of CSU’s for backups. And I have a much lower cumulative gpa than you :’(

Right now, if CPP rejects me, I’m highly considering going back to UCSC… Thing is, I’m not financially stable, even with loans, money is tight. I’m still not sure what the “Not Admissible” really means, I’ll need to call tomorrow and talk to a counselor to understand what it fully means. If it’s the academic probation from UCSC, I think I might have to go back (it seems academic probation at one college = tainted for life, even if you go to another college and get a 3.7…)

Teemoo, where are you currently attending? After being put on probation, did you leave and go back to a local CC? From what I’ve experienced in the past ~4-6 months is that there’s pretty much no turning back from academic probation… I even called UCSC and asked them to remove my academic probation and all they said was “yeah we don’t really do that, if at all” Admittedly, I did do bad at UCSC myself, but a few things actually happened that caused me to do so bad at school (a close relative’s death, homesickness, etc)… ughhhh

No, you are not tainted for life. That is one thing I can assure you. What it seems to me is Cal Polys are the top dog among other CSUs, and so they have the right to possess higher standard than other CSUs. I have talk to multiple admission officers from nationally ranked universities to nationally ranked LACs, they all gave me a similar response. Directly quote from these officers, “If you are dismissed/was on probation from a college or university, you will need full time course work for at least 2 semesters to demonstrate your readiness to apply for admission.” That’s said, if you have 2 semesters solid full time course work, you should be fine at most nationally ranked universities/LACs. (Only apply to sub 50 nationally ranked schools, not sure about top 50 cuz I only talk to officers from schools ranked between 50 to 120.

Just putting out there that you are no where near tainted for doing bad at 1 school. The only exception to this is Ivys’. I am still trying to boost my gpa at CC, too bad only have a cum. 2.84 at the moment. BUT, I already get accepted to one of the nationally ranked LACs so anything is possible. Meng, you are fine, 3.7 is more than enough to prove whatever you need to prove to the committee. Don’t let that CPP thing get into you too much, that shiet is odd.

thanks for that, really. because of UC irvine’s TAG being denied because of the academic probation as well as UCSC not removing it from my records a whopping 2 full years after, I felt like the probation is the void that sucks me away from admissions… I really don’t know what the “Not Admissible” status for CPP is then, I thought it would be that one. Anyways, I’ll give them a call right now and see whats up, i’ll update later. Thanks again.
