UC to UC Transfer After One Year? Medical school?(specifically UCR to UCSB)

Hello everyone. I'm in quite a bit of a dilemma. Please help me. Thank you for any advice.

I am incoming freshman at UCR. I applied to UCSB (my first choice school) during the fall 2012 cycle, and, unfortunately, I was not admitted. I am entering my first year with a positive outlook, but deep down I know that I would be much happier at UCSB.

As of now, I have 40 units from AP tests and another 9 units from CCC classes that I took during high school. By the end of spring 2013 I would be able to reach the 90 unit threshold needed for transferring. I am not too familiar with the transfer process, but I know that one must try to complete as many of the prereqs for a major to have a decent shot at admission.

I am an aspiring medical student as well. I know that major does not matter to medical schools as long as the prereq classes are fufilled.

Currently, I am a biological science major at UCR. I'm fairly certain that I would be unable to transfer to UCSB as a biological science major since I will not complete the prereqs (ochem, etc) until at least sophomore year. However, I think I would be able to apply under a humanities major.

Additional info:

I only received a 3 on the AP English test. I believe this means that I have finished one transferable English course. I will not be able to enroll into a second English class until winter quarter.

I am currently enrolled in Calculus.

I received an A and B in my CCC classes, putting my current GPA at 3.5.

Summary:
1) I want to transfer to UCSB after one year at UCR.
2) If somehow I do find a way to transfer to UCSB, I still want to be able to take the medical school prereqs. Having a shot a medical school is MUCH more important than undergraduate university.

My first question: Is there ANY way I could apply to UCSB in the fall 2013 cycle as a UC to UC Transfer? I would not mind transferring under Philosophy.

2nd Q: If I am able to transfer as a humanities major, could I still enroll in the medical school prereq classes (ochem, etc) at USCB?

3rd Q: Am I being unrealistic, or do I have a decent shot at being accepted as a transfer student? (Assuming I will able to maintain a 3.7-4.0 gpa in my fall quarter)

Question 1: There’s nothing stopping you from applying…just pay the $70 fee. Nobody can say what your first year will end up being like but you have to start getting ready to apply now if you even want to have SB as an option for your second year. Make sure you do take at least some of the Philosophy pre-reqs though to have the best chance.

Question 2: This depends on UCSB’s policy…I know that at UCI and UCLA, major students get priority enrollment and based on what I’ve gone through, these classes do fill up pretty quickly. However, you should be able to take all the med. pre-reqs you need within your 4 years, worst case being that you might not always get the professors or sections you prefer.

Question 3: Assuming you get a 3.7-4.0, you should have a very good chance as a transfer student.

Based on the above, it looks like you should transfer and will probably get accepted. However, IMO, you should stay at UCR if your final goal is to go to medical school. Transferring can lead to unintentional delays in degree completion…you’ll also have to send multiple transcripts out during your med. school application process and explain what…happened there so to speak. UCR just opened their own medical school I believe, and I would investigate how that offers you an advantage as an UCR student (just speculating). On the same token, plans often change and you might end up being miserable at UCR (or super happy)…so yeah, you should apply just so you have that option later on. Good luck!

@oceanpartier Thank you so much for responding.

You’ve convinced me to apply to UCSB. However, there are still a few parts about the transfer process that is discouraging me from applying. I’ve looked online and I can’t seem to find much info regarding one year uc to uc transfers.

I am currently enrolled in three classes for the fall quarter at UCR: General Chemistry, Calculus, and Macroeconomics. (This is 14 units, by the way) So this means that UCSB would have to make an admission decision based solely based on my GPA from five (3 UCR + 2 CCC) classes. Do you actually think UCSB would admit someone with a GPA based on five classes? It seems a bit absurd. The last thing that I would want is for UCSB to throw out my application before actually looking at it.

Also I wouldn’t be able to take any of the prereq classes for Philosophy until at least winter quarter.

1st question: Will my application still be credible when my GPA will be based on five classes?

2nd question: I won’t be able to show the UCSB admission committee a single grade in a philosophy course, since I won’t be taking any philosophy courses until next year. Do you think this would result in an automatic rejection?

3rd question: Do you know anyone who has successfully applied as a one year UC to UC transfer?

Also, if anyone else could provide input/advice I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you.

Question 1: Yes, it’s happened before. You’ll have to do some digging in this forum.

Question 2: If you do not plan to take any pre-reqs by the end of spring quarter, then it’s likely you’ll be rejected. I would call UCSB directly though just to make sure. Also try to squeeze some pre-reqs in winter or spring.

Question 3:Personally, no…but people on this forum have done this. While not ordinary, it is very possible.

There’s actually a lot of info on the topic in this forum. You just have to do some searching. To get you started, here’s a couple of threads you might want to look at:
