on housing questions at Cal - I'm trying to get a straight answer on that from someone I know who's studying there right now, but he's not picking up his cell phone and I'm beginning to feel abandoned, he he... but if you look at craiglist... apartments around the area do seem to be expensive. as for on-campus housing, let me paste the stuff that i got from the website, which i'm not sure you'll be able to access if you didn't turn in your SIR yet.

EDIT: no, actually, i think you can access housing options without a calnet id, just to give you an idea. http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/

Speaking of SIR, doesn't it suck that you have to submit it first before they let you register your calnet ID? at least that's how I think it works. i think it's not fair because i'm sure many students are going to base their intent to register on financial aid, for example, and in the case of Cal, it looks like you can't access your financial aid status unless you have a calnet id.

thanks for the info....

so apartment means I will have to cook, ha? or else i will have to buy the meal plan which will make it costlier than the dorms....

Actually.....a lot of people have received the official award through the mail. I did yesterday, right after I came home from a UCLA tour....lol. How ironic. ;)

Friday I was playing some basketballs, and after the balling session I came home, and found my homie who came back from UCD to hang out already waited me in my house.

Basically I went straight to the computer, he was like "what's up"
and then I opened UCB website, he went "oh S**T."
and then we both saw the letter, and we went "alright", and then we go back to gaming.

Well.....the dorms are soooo far away though. The tour guide said it would take around 25 minutes to get from a dorm to North Campus. It's good to get exercise, absolutely.....but what if you have to make that trip 4, 5 times a day....Seems like such a waste of time. ;-) If that's the case, I'd rather commute.

Oh, ok. that's great then! so which of the two is offering more money to yu, BruinMichelle? My financial aid for berkeley and davis are still both pending. i really hope i hear from them by the end of the week, just so my parents can breath easier too.

Biochemist...believe it or not, they are about neck and neck. With a 20, 865 budget approx. at both of them, I have a combination of Scholarships, grants, and 2000 Work Study. It's frankly just a privilege to have been accepted at both schools. However, financial aid is only given for two years to Transgfers and I would hate to be in a position where I lost a good portion of Financial Aid for some reason and couldn't afford to finish out my education at Cal. At least I know at UCLA, that if anything should happen for any reasion I could commute (50 miles) from my home.

I just don't know anyone from Cal or Northern california. I have no point of reference, just a phone call from Cal today and a lovely Financial Aid notification letter. I'd go in a heart beat if it wasn't so.....expensive. lol

aw.. well, in that case... i dunno. the reasons that my parents don't want me to go to SoCal are the same reasons for your reservations against coming here to NorCal - nobody we know well lives there and can take care of me, etc. Plus my parents are prohibitively protective. Hmm. You're in quite a predicament.

But it's a predicament that a lot people would love to have - "UCLA or Cal?" ;)

Exactly.....I am definitely not complaining at this point. Frankly, I've alredy submitted the SIR (half an hour after I found out last Wednesday), so I know that I am unable to change schools at this point.....I've seen other threads and it looks like I'm locked in at UCLA. I'd hate to jeopardize my admission for anything at this point.......

oh... i see. well, there you go. go bruins! :D

we'll all do great anyway, wherever we end up going.

Is anyone here planning to appeal to Cal?

Anyone here waiting for info on UCLA or UC Berkeley Regents Scholarships?
I received an email (reply) from UCLA which read that Regents Scholars awards sre being mailed this week.

Awww, how sweet. Came home from class and saw the big yellow envelope from Cal. It was neat to see it all spelled out on paper in my hot little hand. Ironically, the embossed invite from the "Chancellor" for the Transfer Scholar's Day at UCLA was sitting on top of the yellow envelope beckoning me......

Checked my voicemail, 2 from Berkeley, one from UCLA. Nice.....

you don't have to submit your SIR before you register your calnet id. I registered my calnet id and found out I got a Cal Bear Scholarship. Go to the checklist and simply register your calnet id then look at your financial aid statement. On my page it shows the calnet id completed but my SIR is in red because I haven't submitted it yet.

Exactly....I tried to create the CalNetID since last Friday but hadn't been able to. It was a popular thread for a little while there when none of us had succeeded at creating one.....

Bump Bump :D

so can we send in more than one SIR? will the other UC's know?

Ok, question.....please take no offense by this, but I am curious. Let me start off with a statement. I find it rather humorous that current students actually have the time to come on CC and "advise" us of the pitfalls and challenges of their school, for how the heck do they find the time? For instance, if UCLA and UCB are so challenging and the competition stiff, then.....why spend 3, 4 hours a week chatting with a bunch of prospective students when you should be studying, or cultivating friendships, working at an internships, etc, right? Doesn't that strike anyone as......contradictory?

Anyway, yes, you'll say..."no, I don't agree at all Michelle because the students on here help us to see what the school is really about and advise us about key issues like housing, meals plans, campus life, etc......so no, I don't see your point". That's very valid and I too have benefitted from their advice. My point is that at what point do we just wash our hands of this and go on our merry way?

Question: Does anyone plan on spending X amount of time on CC once their school year is in full swing? When do people plan on hitting the road? I've noticed that a lot of people aren't around anymore.....and threads have died to birth new more relevant ones....

I was just curious......lately, when I state the obvious, I've been typecast a jerk. lol So, I say so delicately this time....please take no offense (knows that current students, alum frequent this thread)...

i love reading these threads! hope it doesn't die! I still PLAN on checking it.. but who knows. go ucla!

Dont worry...After UCLA,UCSD are all in...A part II is coming...so every1 hold up atleast for a few days.
