UC Transfer Applicants - Come Join

Haha... well, Michelle, look at us transfer students! We're quite obsessed (sp?) with this board as well, and aren't we the ones who have to have top grades, therefore shouldn't we be the ones coming to this board less often? The people who are already at the UCs are fine, they're there already... most of them are probably less concerned about getting an A in every class than we transferees are ;)

But, to answer your question: I hope I'll be able to still swing by here even when I'm already at Cal. It's always good to check on how things are in other universities/colleges. And I bet it'll be fun helping the junior transferees in the years to come. :)

unggio - i'm not sure what the policy is on the SIR thing. I've read somewhere on this board that apparently there is a rule that if you submit two SIRs, your admission may be revoked. This is the thread where I read that info. <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=59678%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=59678</a></p>

Biochem, makes complete sense....In my own defense, I took a few online courses which were only to complete my three A.A's, translation: could literally phone in the effort it took to get the A in the course.....

I completely agree with you, though, for everyone else it might be inappropriate for them to spend quite a bit of time on CC.

I've got a question, of a personal matter. Going to UCLA as we all know is going to be expensive in terms of living there, in the area or around the area....etc. Well, I'm in the position where I already have a full life (part-time job which I love, church, friends, the beach) and I'm not really looking to part with that by moving on-campus. I'm torn between commuting and getting an apartment out there, however, I really am tired of budgeting my free time and money into oblivion (hey, Community College can be expensive too), and I am also tired being so frugal that it goes against my own nature......

If I live at home and commute, I save the parking permit fee (approx. 178 a quarter, rent and all other expenses due to living in an apartment, food, etc.....Also there's a luxury bus that goes from my house to UCLA campus for $2 each way, which is a steal!

Bottom line: Let's compare the numbers.....living at home: a $4 dollar RT on the bus, vs. a $12000+ room and board in a plaza (have to have my own room) which is still affordable, but I will not have any disposable income....i.e. Double Double money which is essential to Southern California existence.....

It's quite a predicament, thank you for reading.....

Allena knows the bus......from Santa Clarita? ;)

Oh, and another thing.....I'm a singer so that will hopefully be taking up more time as well. On the Vanpool idea, I'll be spending 12+hours on-campus every day, I mean....that should be enough time to make friends, join clubs and study, am I right? lol

Shoot, sorry.....one more thing. As I was writing the previous post, I went to get the mail and it was finally....the UCLA envelope, but it was so small. lol Did anyone else notice that as well? Anywy....it was just a very quiet acceptance letter (the same one that we victoriously accessed last week, Happy Anniversary people!) and just a letter regarding Provisional Admissions. Ho-hum....oh well. I'm not waiting for the eFan.

I really think that Cal is jacked up. I completed ALL of their requirements for their Chemical and Nuclear Engineering major (double major) and I still got rejected. I have a 3.71 GPA and just don't understand what else could these people want. I also called the College of Chem admissions office and spoke with this one lady and my god did she have attitude. I needed some information about how many applicants applied to this double major, what was their average GPA, and so on.......i asked her that and she straight out told me "no, we cannot give out such info". Oh well, I will make the time of my life at Davis.

the funny thing is that I just don't understand what more could these people sitting at their offices want??? Also, one of my friends, who I thought would NEVER get into Cal EECS b/c of his low GPA for that major (3.56) got admitted for the SPRING 06 semester....H is this crap??????????? And please don't tell me that I am sour b/c seriously I don't think that it is fair when one applicant (3.7 GPA, no W's and 1 C on transcript) completes all of their dam requirements and gets rejected while another applicant (3.56 GPA, 4 W's and 3 C's) gets accepted into the hardest dam major at Cal.............* this

mosharma134 dont worry man yours can't be worse than mine...I have 3.92(4.0 major...2 B in english classes)...3.8 @ wip time...and got rejected for EECS...that person you mentioned is really lucky...i finished more than berk can handle......it happens cant do much...Time to show Cal what we are made up off...did u hear from ucsd?

mosharma - definitely, definitely appeal, if you really want Cal. if your school's transfer center has the contact info for your Berkeley transfer rep (if your school has one), try to contact that person and ask for help on the appeal process. I was planning on doing that if I didn't get in so I made sure that I got the berkeley person's contact info, and i asked her in advance if she didn't mind my asking for her help in case i don't get in. I think you should appeal; it's worth a shot if you still want Cal (i recognize and understand that it's very possible that you have been "turned off" by their decision to reject you :(). if i were you, i would definitely appeal. i'm really sorry that you didn't get in :(

Mosharma, that sucks. I don't understand how they make some of these decisions, either. I know they are looking at a lot more than GPA -- maybe there were personal circumstances or something in his essays that moved them to accept him? Who knows. Have you considered appealing?

Don't get too down on yourself -- there do seem to be a number of elements being considered that make the whole thing hard to predict. I guess there's a reason for everything, though.

Davis is also a great school, and if that is where you end up, I'm sure you'll do well and have a good time there. Good luck next year!

Has any1 (transfers) been awarded UCLA Regents scholarship yet? I'm wondering if it would already be posted on epal and if so I'm feeling pretty sh***y. I really wanted this one. I guess I'll be going to Berkeley.

4.0 GPA
Prsident, Phi Theta Kappa
Honors Program Graduate
PoliSci
and a nice guy all-around!

yes, I do plan on appealing. I think that the transfer admission spots don't necessarily tend to fill all up. I mean that not all transfer students end up enrolling at Cal. However, I do plan on commenting on the fact that if I can't get admitted to the Chemical/Nuclear Engineering program, then I will like to be considered for the Civil Engineering program. I will also include that I am willing to stay another semester at my CC to complete all of their courses so that I can get into their Spring 06 semester. Does this sound like a good idea??

yeah, I think, besides GPA, personal statement is a very important factor to evaluate your chance into UCs. As i mentioned elsewhere, I got rejected UCD, UCLA but accepted into UCI, UCSD (CS). Although some of people has low GPA, they still admit into competitive majors in pretige UCs because there are special circumstances. After reading some of last posts here, I came back UC sites to view my personal statement. Frankly, 2 parts of it are really bad, seemly lack of english writing skills but the last part (open-end) made me cry A deeply feeling inside.

mosharma, i think the biggest problem was your essay. going by what you said in another thread, you didn't exactly paint a pretty picture of yourself. if you do appeal, you have to realize what you did wrong in the essay and basically apologize for it.

that still wouldn't guarantee your acceptance into either la or berkeley.

Isn't it near impossible to appeal and be granted admission? (Did I pose that right?) I'd cut my losses and go to Davis where your appreciated.....and apply to Cal for Grad.

michelle....I'm not exactly sure what you are getting at. I think they do it because they simply just care and they know what it feels like. Humans in general have a natural ability to empathize with one another and form bonds. Some people just like to help others even if there are no benefits for them.

Collegebabe, I just meant in my previous post that I don't know where a "few" of them get all the time to peruse a website pretty much full with prospective students. We would be better off just searching our school's prospective websites. I have seen more misinformation on this site than I can tell you....lol. Now, how beneficial is that if you're admission gets revoked because you "heard" the wrong thing.....trust me, I've seen it. Used to work as an Admin. Asst. for a Counseling dept. Anyway.....I posed that in more of a selfish way of saying that there is no way in Sheol that I'll be able to come on this website once UCLA gets under way and I'm just wondering how people from these schools are able to spend 6, 7 hours a week on this website (yes, I've been counting).
Like I said, I can only vouch that I had nothing better to do these past few weeks and kinda latched onto this site by accident, but it's a temporary guilty pleasure...

Hmmm....I see what you are saying. Yeah, there's a lot of crap that's put out there. I've gotten the best information from books about college. I knew this one girl who told me that the personal statement doesn't really count for much! DO YOU BELIEVE THAT?! Maybe it is so for some schools, but not for most UCs and certainly not UCLA. Luckily, I knew that was a bunch of bull because I had done proper research.

hah, no wonder you got into UCLA, Michelle, you are a critical thinker. And I mean that in the best of terms...

Collegebabe....thanks, that's so sweet. I've really met some nice people on here and some....<ahem> not so nice, of course, but all in all I stumbled across this site and hve really enjoyed waiting it out with you all during the decisions crunch.</ahem>

I suppose I just found a lot of the insights to be good, but speculation at best. It's great to have these open forums, but we can't certainly rely on a friend's opinion or parent's opinion solely, which might be the case for nervous Freshman, but not us! ;) We've got more at stake I think. Anyway, it was really just my roundabout way of saying.....I really to...."get going soon"! lol

"need", sorry....typo.

Regarding personal statements, I "personally" think some very high GPA's didn't get into their first choice school because they didn't present themselves well in their essays. Now, I could be wrong, but observing over the weeks, you can get a sense of a person's background, writing ability and what kind of impression they make even in an informal setting such as this.....

As we all know the essay is where the colleges learn more about us.....and perhaps they just saw how incgruent a poor essay matched with excellent stats appeared.....the dissonance. Anywho, just my thought on that....who knows.
