Has anyone received a reversal (charge) for a scholarship that was awarded at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year with no explanation? Here we are at the end of the Spring term with finals in view, and this posts in the CARS Billing. My son is independent (over 24) so I cannot help him out. He has not received additional funds since this $5,500 was offered to him, or has his FAFSA eligibility changed. To add insult to injury- he is paying out of state tuition!

What exactly was the grant called?

Was it a Pell Grant?

Was it a UC grant that is only supposed to go to instate students?

This is a UC Scholarship - offered from the get-go. It is the SX 11Berkeley UG Scholarship of $5,500 that was offered my oos son, a transfer student from Oregon State University. So far, the gift aid has paid about $28,000 of his $34,000 tuition for this school year. If this was a grant that was supposed to go to CA residents only - they really goofed! I don’t believe that is the case, although he did recently receive an offer for an unsubsidized Fed. loan even though his loans for the year are maxed out. Thanx.

How can his loans be maxed out for the year when this loan is for the next school year?

What exactly is in his FA package? It sounds like he’s a junior independent student, so it sounds like he may have gotten about $12k in loans, $3k in work-study, 5550 Pell, and this 5500 grant. And, now that extra 5500 has been taken away.

Now that I know that your son is a transfer student, the grant may have been intended for students transferring from a Community College and it was mistakenly awarded.

*Eligibility- The Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to new and continuing students on the basis of both academic merit and financial need. Students entering Berkeley from high school must have a 4.1 GPA. Those entering from community college must have a 3.5 GPA. *

Your son will have to call and ask about it. Frankly, going to Cal as an OOS student is really expensive. Does your son have more affordable options?
