Question for those in the "think they know", which is good enough for me.

I'm 30, and went to college back in the 1990's. Before leaving in 1999, I racked up 50-60 units in New Jersey at NJIT (hey, I grew up there, not my fault), and a 2.08 GPA. Oh, technically I was suspended, though I had already left.

Now I'm at Santa Monica College, and will have completed 66 units there after the spring semester, finishing my major prep and IGETC.

All this talk about too many units hurting transfer chances is sketching me out. Is the combo of my old units and SMC units going to screw up my chances of getting into UC's? What is the deal? It was ten years ago, are they going to care?

Some more info.

I applied to UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UCD.
NJIT 1996-1999 GPA: 2.08 - over 50-60 units
SMC 2006-2009 GPA: 4.0 - over 55 units so far
Major: Physics
Work: Fulltime last 3 years at a CE firm run by a UCLA Professor as Lab Manager/Engineering Assistant
Statements: Def. Solid

Any thoughts? I'm way too anxious for having to wait until April to find out.

For LA and Berkeley L&S if you went to another 4 year school and completed less than 80ish semester units and then attended a CCC and stayed at the CCC for transfer purposes, you won’t hit the unit cap.

Luv, my units are all semester, and my guess is that only some of them from NJIT are transferable, though I have not looked into it because everything I need to transfer I have taken at SMC.

Yes, I listed all my units from NJIT on my app, so my cumulative GPA dropped to just over a 3.0. Too bad.

Thanks Jet. That document was very helpful. Interestingly enough, it appears that I may be in trouble at UCSB which is strange. Not the one I was worried about.

whoops… my post is missing…that’s strange… anyway… well maybe you will luck out and several of those units not be transferable. Then your transferable GPA will go up… your upward grade trend will help =)

Luv, where did your post go? Anyway, good point. I can hope that most of my units are not transferable. There wasn’t anywhere else to go but up! :)

From my understanding, if one has taken over 100 semester units at a single community college, they have not exceeded the unit cap correct? They will simply receive subject credit for the remaining transferable courses.

toooldfor_this,
Please make sure you are in good standing at your previous school. The UC campuses won’t be able to admit you if you are not in good standing with NJIT. I didn’t want this to be a surprise if it comes up.

Curious. This was ten years ago. Does it really matter? The difference between being suspended and not being suspended may be a few phone calls, and I will see what I can do, but wouldn’t anyone at the UC also recognize this fact? What does a few telephone calls have to do with my academic ability, especially when it was ten years ago?

Wait, my previous school is SMC, not NJIT, and I am in terrific standing there. Can you clarify?

In addition, this information is not even included on the UC application. The application inquires as to whether or not you have ever been on probation or suspended at a previous school, but it does not ask if that is or is not still the case. They would not know my status at NJIT until they received my transcripts, which would be after they decided to accept or reject me, is this not true?
