My daughter has many acceptances for her undergrad class of 2025. She is pretty determined on pre-med track and I think can keep up with the rigor of the program. I am quite familiar with all the things that make a good pre-med school - Extra curriculars, shadowing op, research, med schools near by, pre-med advising etc.
We live in CA and she has acceptances for many UCs and other out of state private schools like Baylor in TX. Cost is not so much an issue since she has decent scholarships. Another college she is considering is Saint Louis University, MO. We are leaning towards private for class sizes and attention.
My main question is - looking 4 yrs out when she has to apply to med schools. CA Med schools are notorious for having very few seats and very hard to get into. If you look at their stats, they do show way more in state acceptances. My daughter will remain a CA resident even if she goes to Baylor TX for under grad. Does anyone know, when she applies to CA med schools, will she be treated as a TX student or CA? She will obviously not have the TX residency privileges, but would she also be losing her CA residency chances by goes to a TX undergrad vs UC.

They claim it doesn’t matter. Here is UCLA
Are my chances of admission diminished if I am not a California State Resident?
All applicants are reviewed for admission without consideration to state of residence. https://medschool.ucla.edu/apply-faqs#eligibility
As for tuition, I wouldn’t presume to give an authoritative answer since UC residency requirements are complex but assuming she is still your dependent they say
Dependent of a California resident parent (Condit Bill)
A student who is a dependent child of a California resident parent (if the parent has been a resident for more than one year immediately before the residence determination date) may be entitled to a one year conditional resident classification. During this one year conditional resident classification, the student must fulfill the residency requirements by the relevant deadlines in order to qualify for a continued resident classification for subsequent terms. I know about half-a-dozen doctors who went to medical school at UCSF, and none of them attended undergrad in California or were previously California residents.
She has UCR and UCI acceptance already. Others will be coming out soon and I am confident she will make it to UCSD as well which is what she would prefer (if staying in CA).
Oh Good to know. She will be still dependent on me and will remain CA resident, just was not sure how it affects her chances if she went to OOS undergrad.
I concur. My daughter is graduating from her UCSF program in May. Her classmates are from everywhere.
To the OP, med schools are expensive and competitive in EVERY aspect. If her current ECs don’t lend to labs and community clinic work, for her undergrad, it will be tough for her to find opportunities because of the competitive nature of the premeds out there.
