<p>Sine the UC's recieve so many apps, I would guess that you would want to follow the requirements as closely as possible. I was told that I should keep my essay in the 595-605 word range, and the short answers in the 195-205 range. However, a few words here or there shouldn't kill you.</p>
<p>Rule of thumb: being 20 or less words over or under won't kill your chances. I doubt the UC's (or other colleges) have time to do a word count check on every essay. What they DON'T want to see are essays that are 100, 200, or even more over the word limit. </p>
<p>That said, if you read your essay very carefully, you can probably spot a way to kick out 7-10 words here and there.</p>
