UC writing requirement for 4-year transfers

Hey Folks,

I applied to a pile of UC schools this year for junior transfer. UC requires two semesters of English composition, but the 4 year institution I currently attend only offers one semester of freshman composition. I took plenty of reading/writing heavy courses, but only one of them is in the English department and can be called "english composition."

One of the schools, UCSC has already rejected me, and it's my understanding that they admit anyone who meets the UC eligibility requirements. I meet the remaining requirements clearly without issue, does this mean I can expect to be DQ'd by the rest of them because of this requirement? (incidentally, i'm applying to engineering)

Thanks!

A kind of similar thing is happening to me. However, I took two English courses, but they were in the honors college at my school, and UCSB misinterpreted my transcript. While having a panic attack on the phone with the admissions rep, she told me that the rest of the UC’s will probably misread the same thing. In your case, only having one English course is really going to hinder you, and every UC will probably think the same. Do you have any AP English credit? My advice would definitely be to appeal. You have to convince them that you have taken courses with instruction in writing and lots and lots of composition. If you’re applying to Berkeley, you can have your professors fill out a Reading & Composition questionnaire, which allows L&S to assess your composition courses. That little form is saving my ass right now. Otherwise, a desperation move would be to TRY admission by exception.

Does your school offer a critical thinking class?
