Reading and Comp req.

Hey guys,

I applied for Fall '10 transfer and I'm from out of state, so there's nothing like IGETC, UC reciprocity agreement, or assist.org to help me navigate Berkeley's requirements. Help!

If I understand correctly, L&S has 3 eligibility requirements; they want 1 course in quantitative reasoning, 1 year of a foreign language, and 2 courses in reading and composition. I have most of these completed.

I didn't have to take any English classes at my school because of my SAT verbal score, so I have NOTHING in the way of transferrable English classes. This means that I have to complete R&C in the Spring '10 semester, because Berkeley doesn't let you fulfill requirements over the summer.

I thought eh, whatever. So what if I have to take 2 courses that I don't really want to take, they'll at least count towards fulfilling some gen ed reqs at my current school. I submitted 3 R&C petitions and when I called Berkeley to find out what they'd decided, they told me that 2 courses would fulfill HALF the R&C req., and that I'd have to take 2, or possibly 3 other courses to fulfill both halves. This is B-S! One of the courses I submitted was a standard Eng. composition course, the other an "Intensive writing" course, and the final one, a course in persuasive writing. Comon!

Not to knock community colleges, but why do CC students only have to take 2 courses, and I have to take 4-5?? Is there anything I can do, anybody I can speak to? I would have to take a bunch of classes I don't even want to take just to be considered for admission, and as much as I'm committed to Berkeley, that would be insane.

My major doesn't have any prereqs, I've completed all the basic classes in my major so I'll be able to go straight into the upper level stuff, I have between 60 and 80 credits, I've completed the foreign language requirement, the math requirement... and yet I'm doomed because of this @$%@#$#@ R&C req!!
[/venting]

thanks :(

Haha, anybody?

I know a lot of you are CCC students, but still… I’m freaking out lol.

To clarify-

-Is Berkeley really strict on their eligibility reqs? Like, will they rescind me if the English isn’t done?
-Do you think I’d have a shot at the “admission by exception”, or is that for athletes, people who’ve overcome extraordinary odds, etc…?
-Is it unheard of to complete reqs like this over the summer? Since they dislike the courses at my school so much, why can’t I just take them at a CCC or at Berkeley (if I’m admitted) over the summer before school starts??
-Any other advice you could offer?
-If not, who should I talk to?

I feel like the people who pick up the phones at admissions or credit evaluations unit don’t make the decisions, so they can’t really help me out; maybe around the time when the MyBerkeley site comes up we’ll get assigned to an admissions officer or something?

Thanks.

sorry i can’t help ya there.
bummer situation. It does seem unfair that you would have to take twice the amount of classes.

I personally would not be able to believe it and would try to talk to someone else at Berkeley just to make sure.

Can you talk to your own school counselor about it. Sometimes they can help. (especially when you get a good counselor)

you need to have your cource work evaluated for the L&S reqs if you are from an oos. I have my freshman year from an oos and my osphmore from a ccc. i had my freshman year cources evaluated. to find out how to do this call the evaluation dept at ucb. here is the phone number: 510-642-7391
they are very nice and helpful over there so just call, let them know your concerns and they will tell you how to get the forms, how to have them filled out and where to send them.
