Hi Everyone,

I am a proud member of Brown’s Class of 2016 and I applied a few weeks ago for the UCAAP Pre-Orientation program. Does anyone know, perhaps from experience with prior years, when students who applied receive a reply? I know the deadline for application is June 15, but it’d be great to know whether or not I was accepted soon so I can plan flights out to Providence this fall.

Also, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out exactly what the difference is between FYS and CAP courses. Having recently entered the course lottery, I am still confused. Can anyone succinctly describe the two and perhaps recommend one or the other?

Thanks in advance.

FYS are small, seminar-style classes open only to freshmen. Their purpose is to introduce folks to college-style discussion. The small class sizes gives everyone a chance to speak up and participate actively.

CAP classes are regular classes that are open to the rest of Brown’s population, with varying class sizes. The difference is that if you are enrolled in a CAP course, the professor teaching that course will also be your freshman advisor. Usually, advisors are (to an approximation) randomly assigned based on your indicated concentration, and you only probably see them a couple of times each semester. Some people may benefit from more constant interactions with their advisors, so CAP classes serve this group of freshmen.

Thanks for your reply, aleph0. I really appreciate the information.

Does anyone happen to know when the UCAAP reply may come?

I got my UCAAP acceptance on June 25 the year I did it.

Great, thanks a lot AmbitiousMind07.

I look forward to hearing back to UCAAP and starting my career at Brown!
