UCB, Cornell, Penn or Columbia for CS or EE major

DD has narrowed her choice to these 4 schools. She plans to major in EE or CS and is and also wants to get a good overall education.

I am not an engineer. I am hoping a few engineering majors could share their thoughts on how you would help her make the best decision for her, and which school you would choose.

I’m not an engineer, but… Both UCB and Cornell are highly ranked for computer science and well regarded by employers. My son who works at Google reports lots of colleagues from both schools. Columbia has a substantial liberal arts core. The requirement is decreased for engineers, but check what LA courses are required and whether they appeal to your daughter. I think Penn is lower on the radar for CS, not sure about EE. That said, my son did not attend a top 10 CS program and still did well.

Other things to think about- cost? Where will your daughter feel most comfortable in terms of climate and distance from home? How does she feel about an urban campus versus a campus located in a college town (Cornell)?

UCB is the highest ranked of the four for both EE and CS, but realistically, these are all great schools and it’s not going to make much difference to employers or grad schools which one she attends. I would suggest picking the school that overall seems the best fit.
