I mean, a finance major/concentration in any well-known schools (haas, stern, etc.) is nothing more than taking one or two introductory finance/investment courses, one or two courses on Financial Market and Banks, and bunch of Economics (mainly Micro-) and Accounting courses (Financial Statement analysis, Asset Valuation, Financial Derivative, etc.). As far as I'm concerned, all these courses are offered at UCLA BizEcon dept, so I believe UCLA's faring quite well in regards to Finance concentration.

well, people at UCLA would always argue that that there's only one real finance class, which is true I guess. But there are a number of classes which are definitely more business/finance specific, compared to a traditional econ curriculum. I'm taking a class on the valuation of options and futures right now for example. And there's a few more mathematical finance classes, plus econometrics, so all in all, if you wanna go into finance, you're in good shape. Several employers in the finance industry have even told me that during my interviews.

dhl3 are you choosing ucla over usc then?

It'd be a no brainer for me :) But I don't wanna start the old debate

I agree with DHL: The courselist at berkeley seems to be more a widespread list of both macro/micro issues but moreso macro. I personally am more interested in the business aspects of how economics could be used. Which is why UCLA seems like the better fit for me.

I am going UCLA Bus. Econ, not because simply i got rejected by HASS.

When I knew my decision, I called Hass admission cuz i got mad.
I have 3.95GPA, finished all requirement and breath courses...
I wanted to go Hass, but only because it ranked high.

However, now i am happy that i can still go UCLA Buss Econ.
I understand that most of your concern is more about after graduation.
There is no question that Berkeley has a higher reputation.. But, past few year, I do not see any difference between UCLA and CAL, except Hass.

If you are the person who thinks degree of Berkeley gets you more money, you are wrong. Recent, US NEWS rank says, BErkely ranked at 21 and UCLA 24.. not much difference, means that UCLA has a potential to be a better school than UCB. past few years' stats are proving it.

Moreover, the city of LA has a future. Why do you think house price is going up and up....??? Cost of living goes up and up??? Why people are coming to here when there are million of city in the US?

Because, all the money from the world is now concentrated in this city.
Money from eastern Asia is in LA not New York anymore..
Our main trading countries are not European countries, but China, Japan, and Korea. You will never know how this city will change after two years....

where there is more money, more job and money for student like us...
there is no question about importance of LA. This is the Hub city that connect between Asia and rest of the US.

OVerall, i am going UCLA buss econ, and UCLA will be better school soon...
Berkeley is too far away from here in OC
Plus, Berkeley suck cuz they rejected me.. ^^;;
I will never ever ever go to Berkeley... i will be fan of UCLA...
Many people around me recommended UCLA because UCLA has a potential. but, i simply rejected just because Hass has a super high reputation.
Now I think again, UCLA could be better fitting for me.

Yup.
I heard that the bill has been passed and L.A. downtown's going to be structured very similar to NYC. Can't imagine how much L.A. will develop within the next 10, 20 years.

nandaz,

i got rejeceted by haas last year also. and I had the same thought .. I'll never go to berkeley ever ever! hahaha...
good luck to you in UCLA bizecon!
UCLA is really a nice and great school (except the freaking summer time) and i hope u will enjoy it!

I'll to chime in with my perspective.
I chose UCLA biz econ over Cal econ a year ago and have no regrets, especially after hearing ucbhi's description of Cal's econ program. I took just one economic history class at ucla and it bored me to death, so having to take several at Cal would've sucked. Anyway, I agree that the accounting classes are way way harder than the econ classes here. The lowest grade I ever received in an econ class was a B+. I've taken only one accounting class so far and received a C in it. Completely took me by surprise.
As for the success rate of transfers making it into bizecon, it's really a mixed bag. I've read many times on this forum that transfers tend to do well in the econ weeders, but that wasn't the case for many transfers I know. Out of around 10 bizecon hopefuls I know, only myself and one friend made the cut. I don't want to scare any of you--its definitely doable! If you really want it, you'll get it. And you don't have to live in the library to make the cut. Oh, and one more thing. It's not the end of the world if you don't get into bizecon. The econ program plus the accounting minor is almost the same as bizecon with the accounting minor. Either path will qualify you for the CPA certification.

jtsf-
u have that history of economics with murphy? i had that last quarter and i never went to class.. hahah

That's interesting, all the transfers I know made it into biz econ. Reading about professors on bruinwalk.com and choosing them "wisely" should help and then it's not all that hard to get the 3.5 in the first two econ classes.
Plus jtsf is right, not making it into biz econ isn't that bad, there's still tons of opportunities out there, companies usually don't just interview biz econ students, it's pretty open.

I took Murphy as well, never went to class, screwed up the midterm and still got an A, so easy :)

hahah maxx i think we were in the same class!
i screwed up the final and got A.. hahah

haha, that's great, I heard that Murphy has changed the exam format for this quarter. What are you taking this quarter?

HAHA... good luck to the students then! I don't think the exam is doable if he's changing the format...

I am taking Econ 102 and 145, Mgmt 120A and 122

what about you?

102 and 120A as well, plus 141C (math finance)

I just looked at the latest job postings and campus interviews and even though the recruiting season is over and won't be in full swing until October, there were tons of good jobs posted, some investment banks have already campus interviews announced for october. So for all the people who always worry that UCLA doesn't yield good job opportunities, there's really nothing to worry about.

I was just wondering for UCB, what department is harder to get in, mathematics or economics?

Yup I had Murphy last quarter too! I didn't start studying for his midterm and final until the day before. His class brings me back to the community college days.

Right now I'm taking econ 102, mgmt 127a and a health science class.

hahah so all of us are in 102.... u guys did well in 102???

didn't like that last midterm, he's definitely harder than my previous econ professors.
