Ucb, ucla, ucd, uci + mit, nyu

Hello, I am a rising senior, mostly interested in applying to UC's but a few private colleges as well. I'm interested in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, but am looking at Industrial Engineering as another possibility. Nor sure if relevant, but my high school is located in the Silicon Valley, so the majority of students are also aiming towards CS majors.

Chance me to:

MIT
NYU
Columbia

UCB
UCLA
UCD
UCI

Academics:
Unweighted GPA: 3.76/4.00 <-- This is one of my biggest weaknesses I believe, but I show a slight upward trend
UC Weighted GPA: ~4.2/5
SAT: 2250 ( taken once), Math: 740, Reading: 730, Writing: 780
SAT II: 790 Math II, 750 Bio M, 740 Chem (Should I retake Chem?)

AP Score: Sophomore Year: Calc BC - 5, Junior Year: Chemistry - 5, Comp Sci A - 5, Eng Lang/Comp - 5, Statistics - 5

Extracurriculars: <--(Also a bit weak, not many leadership positions.)

Science Club (10,11)
Treasurer for Women In Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Club: (11)
Secretary for California Technology Youth Leaders (11)

Writer for Yearbook (10,11)

10 years of violin
First violin California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra

Lynbrook JV Badminton (9,10)
MVP JV (9)
Lynbrook V Badminton (11)

Science Olympiad Regionals 2009: 2nd Ecology, 3rd Earth Science
Science Olympiad Regionals 2010: 1st Earth Science, 2nd Disease Detectives, 2nd Ecology, 3rd Experimental Design

umm… I have sibling legacy to UCB if that does anything

MIT - no.
NYU - match
Columbia - high reach
UCB - match/low reach
UCLA - match/low reach
UCD - low match/safety
UCI - low match/safety

Sorry I don’t know much about those schools, but this is my guess.

Thanks
MIT was kind of a potshot, but having UCB as a low reach is comforting

MIT is completely out of the question.

UCB-Reach
UCLA-Reach

Since you’ll be applying for EECS at Berkeley, I guess you’re

reach to high reach for Berkeley

reach to high reach for MIT (you have a chance!)

match to slight reach for Columbia and UCLA

match for NYU and all the rest of the schools in your list.

^High reach at Berkeley and low reach at Columbia? I know you’re a Cal grad but are you kidding?

Okay; I could be wrong on Columbia. It probably would be as hard as Berkeley, or maybe even harder.

The admission rate for Berkeley is 23% whilst it’s 9% for Columbia. However, Columbia’s Early Decision has 43% acceptance rate. For Berkeley engineering, it’s only 16% acceptance rate, according to last year’s data, and this year is Berkeley’s fiercest admissions ever (stats-wise). And since the OP is applying for EECS, the most oversubscribed program in the College of Engineering (COE), chances are, the admissions are even tougher, predicted at less than 12%. The average GPA and SAT scores for COE at Berkeley are significantly higher than all the rest of the colleges. And the stats of the admitted students for EECS are higher than all the rest of the admitted students of the said college. So, in effect, we are talking about Columbia versus Berkeley’s hardest program to get onto.

Top 10% of high school class:
Berkeley - 99%
Columbia - 93%

SAT score (25/75 percentile):
Berkeley
Reading: 620-740
Math: 650-770
Writing: 640-750

Columbia
Reading: 680 - 770
Math: 680 - 780
Writing: 690 - 770

(Please take note that Berkeley’s data is not superscored as Berkeley does not superscore SATs, and engineering stats have usually higher data points than the rest of the university.)

Average unweighted GPA
Berkeley - 3.93
Columbia - no available data

Average weighted GPA
Berkeley - 4.39
Columbia - no available data

BTW, I didn’t go to Berkeley. I would have loved to, but I didn’t get accepted. I, however, was accepted at Columbia.
