UCD Appeal?

Hi guys–

Well, UC Davis was in my top 2 choices for schools and unfortunately I was rejected with a 3.83 GPA, but only a little above decent SAT scores.

I can understand my rejection and honestly I’m not surprised. Most likely I’ll be going to Cal Poly SLO although there are some turn-offs about that school for me. Preferably, I’d go to Davis, but since that’s out of the question I’m considering MAYBE doing an appeal. I mean, hey, I don’t have anything else to lose, right?

But appeal admissions aren’t posted until April 30th, and most schools expect a decision by May 1st (I think they set this up purposely to lessen the number of appeals). I would not want to wait that long to send in my admissions to Cal Poly (there goes housing…) but i’d be more comforting just to have another choice.

So, has anyone here who’s been rejected appealed? Has anyone appealed and got accepted in the past? I’d like to get a little more info on this from the student’s perspective and not just that off the UC website.

I’ve had a lot of personal and health tragedies in my last 3 years of high school, I mentioned one in one of my essays, so I really don’t know what else to say in an appeal. Plus, I don’t really want to whine myself in and use personal issues to excuse my way into the school.

Would I be able to attach a letter of rec?

Thanks in advance :0

If I was in your shoes, I would go ahead and submit that SIR to Cal Poly, and simultaneously use your appeal to Davis as backup. Since one is in the CSU system, and the other is in the UC system, you should be able to forfiet Cal Poly if you do end up getting into Davis after the appeal. Honestly, what can Cal Poly do to a student who doesn't want to go anymore.

If your appeal gets through, then you can accept UCD's admission offer then, but if it doesn't go though, then you would still have Cal Poly to fall back on. Both are great schools and very comparable, so in the end, whichever school you end up in would be a good choice. It's a win-win situation.

Just do the appeal and see what happens. Worse thing that can happen is that it doesn't get approved, but you will never know unless you try it. There's nothing to lose in this situation.

Personally, I would try for both schools at once. Just try to carefully put together a good appeal. You never can predict how things may turn out.

Thanks for your response, Nate Cali.

I always thought no matter who you sent your admissions to, once you did that you can't send one to another school if you happen to change your mind or else both schools cancel you out.

I'm pretty sure Davis won't take me, based on some of the other students' stats here, and I'd hate to again pour my heart out onto another piece of writing for Davis to take me, wait till April 30th, and get rejected again. But I really have nothing to lose.

Even if I was admitted through appeal, I'd feel like I didn't really "earn" myself in; Id' always feel a bit tainted (lol).

Thanks again for your response :)

Are you sure we should submit SIR first? I mean, the appeal decision is posted on the 30th, and you can easily submit your SIR on that day...

but then there goes room for housing ^^^ That's the thing. Plus, I wouldn't want to cut it that short anyway. What if your internet goes out or something. LOL, just gotta stay prepared :)

Im pretty sure housing is not first come first serve. Housing comes after the SIR deadline (may 1st).

If your internet goes out, you can go to the library.

You can submit yoru SIR earlier, from what I've heard, you can even change AFTER you submit your SIR if you get your appeals accepted... you'd only be out of 100 bucks. I'm not sure if this is the only consequence, anyone else know more about this?

Housing at Cal Poly SLO is first come first serve... I'm in the same position as you are right now. I'm probably sending in my appeal tomorrow. I say you just sign up for housing, my friend did the same last year. She appealed to UCB and got in, she then contacted UCLA and told them she wasn't going there anymore. She lost her housing payment, but it's not that much. I think it was something like $200? I'm not really sure on the price but it's somewhere along that line.

"On-campus housing is not guaranteed. Housing spaces are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis to those who submit their on-line housing application and mail their Student Housing License Agreement with payment (fall students must ALSO accept Cal Poly's offer of conditional admission via the 'Accept/Decline' link)."

"Housing Application System: Open 8 AM - 10 PM

Typically, you can only submit one SIR, but in your case I would send in my SIR to cal poly while you appeal your UCD admissions decision. If you get in to UCD, withdrawal your SIR for calpoly.

Best of luck

Thanks, Nillo_Joe.
:)

How long does it take to submit SIR... should I just gamble on the chance and wait till the 30th (that's when UCD posts appeals decision) or should I not take ANY risk at all and submit early.

Well how much is the deposit from Cal Poly? If you decide to later withdraw your SIR, will they refund the deposit?

I have no idea how much the deposit is. I'll have to check their site.

WOuld I be able to attatch a copy of a letter of rec that a teacher wrote and have it still count without it being the original? Or does it have to be freshly dated and signed again? It's still from this year.

To make the most of your appeal, I would ask that teacher to write for you a new updated letter. If you are able to meet with your teacher and explain to your teacher your situation and what you're trying to accomplish, and that your sole intention now is to get your UC Davis appeal approved, the teacher may be able write a better more narrowly focused letter of recommendation.

Just remember that there's gonna be a ton of other students doing appeals also, so you need to somehow make yours stand out from the masses. For the appeals, the UC says that they only want new information that wasn't originally on your UC application, so you need to provide them new additional info different from stuff on the app. Just try to be as convincing as possible.
