My sibling is OOS and Pell Grant-eligible. Per year they’d have to pay ~$56,436 (not including airfare, books, dorm supplies, etc) if they chose to not do work-study. They didn’t apply for any UCD-specific merit scholarships since it’s not in their top 10 schools. Use the Net Price Calculator here: https://myawards.ucdavis.edu/AidEstimator. Unfortunately UCD does not have any need-based scholarships.
@Gumbymom Do you are anyone else know when the financial aid award information comes out for UC Davis after being accept this past Thursday? Thank you!
@nella2024 I don’t think either school weighs either stat higher. Because if what you said is true, I should have gotten into UCSD and rejected by UCD. (3.7 UW/4.55W w/ 35 ACT)
@Thunder132: The FA office is separate from admissions so give it a week or two. With the Corona virus issues, I am sure this is impacting their ability to get all the FA packages ready for the students.
I signed up for an Admitted Student webinar and it was supposed to start at 6pm today, but the link I was emailed isn’t working. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or is something wrong on my part?
Hi! I was accepted into UCD last week. I was wondering if there is anyone who has been to both UCSD and UCD and is willing to compare both of them. I have visited UCSD but am unable to visit UCD due to the country’s current situation. Thank you.
@Jg2028
I visited both of them last summer/ spring break and I can offer some insight.
UCD is just a short drive from the Sacramento airport so it’s not too hard to get there from home. It’s surrounded by farm land and there’s a small town nearby that has a really mellow and chill vibe. (Not a ton to do though). Not much of a party scene as well, (I’m sure you could find some if you wanted to). It’s a huge biking campus and everything is green around there. The people on campus were all relaxed and it totally fits someone who likes to relax more than always being in a rush. As always with a UC, the buildings were all nice, although some were a tad outdated, but there are also a few brand new buildings.
UCSD is right off the 5 freeway and extremely close to the beach. The beaches there are beautiful with big cliff sides especially at Blacks (nude beach just FYI). In comparison with Davis, I felt that UCSD had a more organized, but larger campus. There is also a lot more industry nearby so I would think that it’s easier to get internships and a job afterwards. UCSD seemed like more of a serious school; people are more uptight than UCD and more study-focused. The surrounding city, La Jolla, is a very wealthy area not a traditional college town. The buildings at UCSD are larger and quirkier (mainly the library, which is stunning in person, and the Jacobs building). There are also numerous art installations spread throughout the campus.
Disclaimer: I’m positive there are people that differ from what I took from seeing the campuses and wherever you go you will find a crowd like yourself. Hope this helps!
@calgra
Thanks for the insight!
did anyone get into UCD with a stats major? if so, what were your stats
Searching the UCD stats only decision thread, here is what I found.
Sorry only 1 data point.
Admitted (In-State)
Statistics
UW GPA: 4.0
UC GPA: 4.2
SAT: 1500
MathII: 800
Quite a bit late but just wanted to share my stats –
I was waitlisted at UCD
Instate, NorCal public school
SAT: 1570 (took once)
GPA UW/W: 4.0/4.6
9 APs, all 4s or 5s on tests
Solid ECs and essays, demonstrated interest.
Not gonna lie I kinda expected to get into UCD, and I’m not sure if they waitlisted me for something like yield rate protection or if they just didn’t like the vibes I presented. Anyway, I really liked UC Davis, but I got into the other UCs I applied to, UCSB and UCLA, so I’m pretty happy with my choices. Just keep in mind everything’s random sometimes and don’t feel down about yourself (ahem, or your kid) because of rejections/waitlists.
Also congrats to everyone accepted!
Has anyone’s financial aid section updated on the portal? I read somewhere that it was supposed to update 2-3 business days after the decisions released. I still have the blue bar that says, “Your personalized UC Davis financial aid offer is still being prepared. Check back here soon.”
@CollegeMomCL2024 my daughter is a freshman at Davis and absolutely LOVES it. She was devastated that she wouldn’t get to complete her year on campus now that they have transitioned to online learning for spring quarter.
She doesn’t get bored at all. There are so many things to do on campus. It all depends on what you are going to college for. If all you are looking for is a party, then maybe Davis isn’t the right fit for you - it is full of students who actually want to be there. She’s made wonderful friends and does find the odd party or two to attend (and my daughter is not even a party girl!). She loves the cows!
It’s just a beautiful campus and it feels safe. Downtown Davis is also just as beautiful and the whole place is so accessible either on foot, bike or the free transport buses! We’ve been beyond impressed by the level of support offered to her throughout her freshman year from housing, to bill inquires, to classes etc.
They just accepted her sister this year too, and I think she would love it just as much!
@Thunder132 my daughter received her financial award letter by portal today. She received an email stating her portal had been updated.
@scratchy903
Thank you for the info. I think my daughter will fit in well there. She is not a partier by any means. She’s very studious, she likes animals, nice safe campus, she’s almost a vegetarian, so she’ll like fresh produce lol, and the small town nearby. I think it will be a good place for her as long as she’s not homesick.
@CollegeMomCL2024 I attended Berkeley for undergrad and Davis for vet school. Being from Los Angeles and used to the big city, Davis was not exactly my cup of tea initially. I loved Berkeley, don’t get me wrong, but Davis… a gem and a half! A true college town! No one there but the students, faculty and employees of the University. Boring? Umm… yea Berkeley was a liberal crazy hoot, but Davis was let’s just say ripe for the absolute best stereotypical college shenanigans and memories made for a lifetime. My nephew is at Irvine, miserable on the weekends because everyone goes home. I remember Studying on the grass in the Arboreteum, trips to lake Barryessa with the dogs, more Microbreweries than a mom should really approve of but biking home afterwards in an incredibly safe community makes me at least not panic that my kid has not fallen far from the tree. And the cows and Llamas and organic food…College kids will be stressed, but there’s something calming about being stressed in the the middle of all that nature. Really makes a bout as chill as you can be in a college atmosphere. I’m sad that Davis has a poorly deserved reputation . Ask anyone who has attended and they will will sing it’s praises. My kid just got accepted and I’m over the moon about it!! She wouldn’t even consider it cuz all her friends told her it smells like cows. It’s her choice of course, got into BU as well, but I know if she decides to go, she will have an incredible college experience. This from an LA native, Berkeley grad, who maybe met one cow before landing in Davis. Go Aggies!
@CollegeMomCL2024 I just posted a long winded reply singing Davis’s praises and I guess I did something wrong and it disappeared ?. A short recap- Davis is the ultimate college town. Bad rep with kids because it smells like cows supposedly (not really). Irvine- commuter school, UC San Diego- very spread out. Davis- nature, trees, microbreweries,Lake Berryessa, rock climbing in the gym and outdoors. Think of a town patronized by pretty much only members of one University other than the friendly locals. Ripe for the stereotypical college shenanigans and the making of memories you may not want to fondly retell to your kids till they’re 18. I went to Berkeley undergrad, Davis vet school. Loved loved Berkeley, Los Angeles large city native. First semester, sad big city kid. By 2nd semester in absolute love with that place. Something about being in nature that really blunts college stress, making for much friendlier and chill classmates. If you are a partier, microbreweries + bikes = much safer inebriation. Trust me, don’t assume cow towns don’t party. My nephew is at Irvine, sad and lonely on the weekends because everyone goes home. My kid just got into Davis and this mom is over the moon about it. Her choice of course, considering BU as well, but I know if she chooses Davis she will have four amazing years! This from a Berkeley grad, big city native.
Congratulations to class of 2024!
@Mom2sam
Thank you so much! My only issue is distance, and we can’t see the school in person before we make the decision. It sounds like a great school, and a good fit for my daughter. I’m so glad she got accepted.
I can’t help but chime in on Davis as well! We visited all of the UCs and despite getting into the others, Davis is where my daughter felt the most at home. We did move to the Bay Area from Chicago about 6 years ago so maybe that’s why. I also come from a long line of UIUC grads so the environment (and the cow smell) made me feel right at home, too. She’s not a beach kid but loves the outdoors and can’t wait to peddle around that pretty campus next year.
