I visited Davis and I really liked the campus although my parents are sorta trying to convince me to attend UCLA. The part of their argument that has the most strength to me is that UCLA is a better school to go to for engineering. (BTW, I’m going for computer science although I might change to a different kind of engineering.) Going to Davis is cheaper-I got the regents’ scholarship, but they talked with family friends and said that UCLA costs more b/c they spend more on the labs and equipment/supplies and have better facilities overall. Can someone clarify this for me and tell me about the engineering department at Davis? Admittedly, other schools “talk” more about engineering departments than Davis. Anyways, I’m hoping to have enough conviction to send in my SIR soon. Davis-2014!

I am going to Davis for engineering over SB and Purdue, but for BME. Not sure how great it is at CS though.

Computer Science in Davis is actually not a major in the college of engineering. It is offered in the college of Letters and Sciences, so if later down the road should you decided to switch to a major in the engineering then you will have to complete a sequence of courses listed on their website with a certain GPA and file a petition to switch into the college.

umm… I meant “Computer Science & Engineering”- I guess I should have written it all out; I think I was trying to say CS in the Engineering Dept.umm this is sort of confusing- I think thats what I’m trying to say…um yea…?

CSE is definitely in engineering, so if you seek to switch to another kind of engineering then it wouldn’t be much of a hassle. I am a EE major in Davis and I have seen people switching from electrical to mechanical and electrical to civil easily because they are already in the college.

@smallpotato can you comment on the department a little more? Anything that comes to mind like any good/bad experiences and any words of wisdom for those incoming.

the website says that Davis has the largest concentration of engineering majors than any other UC

^ I’ve read that, but the department looks as if it’s the ugly sister of the major family. At least that’s how it looks on the outside looking in. An inside perspective would help the curious.

^ request for inside perspective seconded;
while I know I’m going to go to davis and really liked it, there’s a part of me that says, going to another place is probably better for a major in engineering- ex: riverside sent a packet about engineering dept-makes it seem more focused on engineering, like they care more about it; davis…not so much;I’m looking for some ease of mind on that part.( or the rebuttal to a hesitation i have for not SIRing yet )

idk what you mean by “ugly sister of the major family”?

engineering is just fine at davis. the sciences and engineering seem to be more popular as well as ranked highly. i, too, was intrigued by the fact that we have the most majors in engineering offered so that if you weren’t exactly right you can easily switch to a different one. a lot of the professors are doing cutting edge research in their fields, and while they only mention it in passing in lecture, it is pretty cool to know that your physics professor is researching for toyota how to cut thru a block of steel with a piece of string and an electron spark. or that your quantum mechanics prof is doing research with the atom smasher we have on-campus.

and ucr is just sending u the engineering packet bc they would really really like you to go. ucr is decent at engineering im sure but i dont think u should turn down davis for riverside (unless u want to go to ucr).

u really should go with ur gut feeling, this is the next 4 years of your life (not your parents’) and you shouldn’t spend it thinking “what if”. i know personally i would turn down ucla without a second thot, but that is just me.

I just meant that when I say UC Davis to someone, they’re like, “Oh, so you’re going to be a vet?” I’ll (probably) be attending Davis in the Fall, I wasn’t trying to offend anyone.

Do you have any experience with CS classes at Davis? Can you comment on the rigor, the quality of the teaching and students? It seems the department is well know for cryptography, but I’m wondering how their AI/control emphasis is? Any experience/info on contributing to research? Thanks for any feedback.

I cant believe you are considering UCR over UCD. -_-

UCR= In general horrible, their Engineering is horrible among UC’s, at least compared to the top 5. They gave me a full ride for EE. Like I have already said, I turned down Purdue (#9 for Eng) and UCSB (#15 for EE) for Davis. I know people who turned down Cal and UCSD for Engineering at Davis.

Davis Engineering is fine, its ranked #30 overall in the country. For other specialties, it is ranked very high.

haha yes we do have a really great vet program
but that is similar to thinking someone is going to major in film if they’re going to usc :)

unfortunately i am not in CS, im a mech/aero, but i have enjoyed my learning experience. classes are challenging, but engineering is hard at any school. the freshman classes have a lot of curving going on usually too.

@TheLegend, there’s a misunderstanding in how i’m using riverside as an example, although i thought the campus was interesting (i guess i like bikes/scooters alot… ha).
Well, I guess I’ll go do the SIR to Davis tomorrow. Thanks to cutieflutie for giving me some info on the engineering dept. It was just that when I visited there on Decision+Picnic Day I was unable to go to learn about the dept and that lack of info was like the weakness in the list of reasons for going to Davis; it was always one of my top choices and it is my top choice after visiting colleges. Other than that, I’m looking forward to Davis, and possibly seeing you guys there.

You can look stuff up on the program. Also, on decision day is the day I made my decision to go to Davis,; because I talked to the engineers there.

Anyway, welcome!!
