UCSC vs UCD Computer Engineering

I was accepted to UCSC and UC Davis for Computer Engineering. How do these two compare for CE?
Davis is closer to home, and they've provided much more aid (which is very important to me). However, I don't know much about the computer engineering programs at either of the colleges.

Any advice? And also how does the social scene compare? I want to focus more on academics where ever I go. An academic environment is important to me.

Davis is generally regarded as a better school. It also has the whole ‘college town’ vibe working for it. Add that to the better aid package and your decision seems pretty easy.

Good luck.

Yeah I know Davis is ranked waaay higher, but i literally know nothing about their CS program. Which is why I’m debating between the two. Most of the people I know who have applied to Davis are planning to major in Biology or something related to that.
But thanks for the advice anyway :]

I think that UCSC has more computer engineering faculty than davis

One of my friends went to UCD for CE and transferred as soon as he could. I guess the CE program had a huge fallout at Davis and almost lost accreditation. The issue apparently was that too many classes were being taught by TA’s and the majority of the TA’s were international students whom only had to take a written literacy test and not an oral one. Plus UCSC is very close to silicon valley which makes job hunting easy and it’s ranked #5 in CE.

UCSC is WELL KNOWN for their computer engineering
I would definitely suggest UCSC

@slowscout- Thanks but when you weigh that against a better financial aid package and proximity to home, is it worth it?

@steponme111- Doesn’t UCSC have a party school reputation? Or am I wrong? Do you happen to know anything about the academic environment and the general atmosphere among the students?

@chima76 UCSC does nto have a party school reputation at all !!! that is UCSB and SDSU LOL

UCSC has a laid back atmosphere. Of course there will be parties here and there but not as much as UCSB.

There is a thread in here. Look up: UCSC Party Scene

@steponme111 Oh haha oops :stuck_out_tongue: Well that’s a relief!
Laid back?

Yeah okay I will! Thanks for your help :)

I, myself, am debating between UCD and UCSC for computer science (pretty closely related to CE) and while I know UCD has a better ranking, I’m more interested in the FHYP/Regents and the location at UCSC. Not to mention, if the school is well known for their CE, I think it would be a benefit for a CS major to take advantage of that as well. While Davis is definitely closer to home for me, I’m pretty excited to explore the new area! Also, @chima76 there’s a gaming dorm at Crown College

@chima76 It’s your call. I’m assuming you live in the valley. I live in Woodland which is right next to Davis and I did a COSMOS thing at Davis last summer. All I know is UCSC has a better CE program than UCD but I mean it’s your call man.

@misssleepingin Yeah same thoughts here. I haven’t heard back from UCSC about my FYHP application, so maybe if I do get accepted for FYHP, I can take a better informed decision. Yeah Santa cruz would be a new (fun) area to explore, plus I love the weather over there! But thanks for your input anyway :)

@slowscout Yeah I live like an hour from Davis. Like I said, I still need to hear from UCSC about honors and financial aid/scholarship so afterwards I can take a better decision. I really do appreciate your help though :)
