UCD Tag

I have a question regarding one of the questions on the UCD Tag Self-Assessment Questionnaire, the question states "if you previously attended a baccalaureate institution, will you have 120 transferable quarter units or more of combined university and community college coursework?"

I attended UCSB for one quarter Fall '09 and left winter quarter to attend a CC. I've been attending the same CC ever since and have accumulated 100 units already. I'm planning on applying to transfer this upcoming fall 2012 and my question is if I've become ineligible to apply for UCD Tag because I will have over 120 units by spring 2012.

The best thing to do would be to take non transferable classes (thats what I am going to do) or apply for tag at another UC since it clearly says going over 120 will make you ineligible.

^Ignore that advice.

Though all your CC classes that were UC-transferable will still be considered as completed and count towards your transferable GPA, the UC will only give you 70 “countable” units once you enroll. This is to prevent CC students from transferring in with more units than a typical Junior and so transfer students will still need to complete approximately 2 years of upper division coursework. Feel free to continue to take as many transferable classes at your CC as you’d like. They will not affect you negatively in any way.

So, count the number of quarter units you have from UCSB and add 105 quarter units (equivalent to 70 semester units). This is the number that the TAG application is asking for.

^ if you previously attended a baccalaureate institution, there is a cap on the number of transferable classes you can take which is 120 units. What we want to know is the units we took at baccalaureate institution count towards the 120 unit cap or not?

Yes, the UC transferable ones will. That is the whole point of it. FYI that’s exactly what I just addressed above :)

Thanks for the info, I calculated my total and I’m at 84 units as of Summer 2011. Another question, do I have to be a full time student for the remaining 3 quarters (until spring 2012) up until I transfer? I’m asking because if I do have to be a full time student, I’d hit the 120 unit cap.

On the TAG application it gives you spaces to address the reasons why you might not be full time one quarter or semester. But you really can’t have too many units AS LONG AS THEY ARE ALL CCC UNITS. I have over 200 units ( I am 58 years old). But they are all from community colleges (3 of them). My transfer counselor at my cc says it doesn’t matter as long as they are from community colleges. They will only use 70 when we transfer I think so that we are on the same track as others juniors. For my final semester, spring 2012, I only need to take 2 classes to complete IGETC. With all my units there is no reason to be full time. I plan to just take the 2 classes I need rather than spend money on units I don’t need. I plan to explain that and I am sure it will be ok.

I see you did have some classes at UCSB. You need to talk to a counselor or make sure you don’t take any more classes than the ones you need to complete IGETC. I don’t think they want you spending money on units you don’t need.

^ thanks for your advice. I definitely will see a counselor asap to help my calculate and keep track of my units. I figured that I need to be a full time student in order to stay on my parents’ health insurance so I’m planning on just taking some non-transferable courses to get a minimum of 12 units. I definitely need to pay attention to what I’m taking for the next 3 quarters.
