UCD to UCI??

Hi,

I'm a freshman at UCD but I don't like it here and I like UCI much better. I know it is probably to early to tell but what are the chances that I will successfully be able to transfer? I got a 3.7 GPA in the fall and I will assume that I will get generally the same GPA year long. Do extracurriculars matter? And I am not sure which classes transfer over since assist.org doesn't let me do UCD --> UCI? I am currently at 51 units after this quarter, 24 being from APs. I also finished most of my GE's at UCD. I kind of just need general information and I'm not really sure what direction I should be aiming for.

It’s much more difficult to transfer UC to UC. It’ll be easier if you dropped out of UCD and went to a community college for a while, then transferred to UCI.

If you wanted to try and transfer from UCD, you would have to apply Fall 2012 for Fall 2013 admission.

I know there’s something called UC Reciprocity for your GE, but I’m not sure how that works. Also AP Credits given by UCI might be different from UCD; check their policy.

Hi Alishal,

I have applied for a UCSD to UC Davis transfer. Through this process here are some of the things I learned about UC to UC transfers:

According to StatFinder: [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx)

When you run a Custom Table.

Applicants(All transfer students)> Term and year(Fall 2009)>Residency (All applicants) > Universitywide or campus(Irvine)> Type of information(Rates and counts)>Type of table(Simple table) > Applicant characteristics(Type of college prior to UC)

Here are the stats you get for admissions from UC-to-UC transfers to Irinve:

443 people applied for fall and 195 got admitted. This is a 44% admit rate.

The admit rate from a California Public 2-Year university to Irvine is significantly higher at a rate of 65.3 percent.

Keep in mind that these stats are based on 2009 admission statistics. There’s a big gap for when you’ll be applying in Fall 2013 so it may either be a little higher or lower.

However, based on your 3.7 GPA at UC Davis there’s a very high chance they’ll accept you because that’s a good transfer GPA.

If you really don’t like UC Davis at all, you should probably attend community college. You can save a lot of money there and plus you can TAG into UC Irvine, which basically means if you earn a minimum of 3.2 GPA in CC you will be guaranteed a spot at Irvine during the fall quarter.

Here is more information: [Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/admissions/tag.html)

If you choose to stay at UC Davis and do a UC-to-UC transfer:

You need to check in with your counselor so you can finish all of your GE’s so that you can earn UC Reciprocity by the end of your sophomore year, Spring 2013.

UC Reciprocity means that if you finish all your GE’s at your current UC they will satisfy the GE’s at Irvine. If you don’t complete it you’ll have to do a lot of the GE requirements over again based on Irvine’s GE requirements…too much of a hassle.

You still want to take the lower divs for your major based on UC Davis requirements. But also, email the major department at Irvine to get a sense of what’s going on.

Most of your classes will be transferrable because you’re already at a UC.

Also, be aware of a 120-unit cap for transfer students. If you exceed the 120-unit cap then there’s a chance you won’t be eligible for a junior transfer. The 120-unit cap might not apply to engineering majors though so check with the school. The units from your AP credits don’t count into the unit-cap, so you probably won’t exceed it.

If you apply for a transfer, the application is basically the same as the freshmen application. However, the second essay question is different. It asks:

What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.

You probably want to do some extracurricular activities related your intended major so you will have something interesting to write about. And plus, extra curricular activities will always help your application.

Anyway, if you maintain a 3.5 or above you probably have a good chance. If you really don’t like UC Davis maybe just go to a CC because you can save money and you won’t have to worry whether you’ll actually get into Irvine because you can TAG in.
