Ucd ucsb uw

Hello CC,

Another college decision thread! I am from Northern California and have been accepted into all three schools. I want to major into business, or at least be set up for graduate school and get my MBA.

Both UCD and UCSB do not have the business school that I am looking for, but they are much more feasible to attend than UW. Also, their weather is better (which is not a deciding factor, but I’d rather be in the sun). SO, my plan is to transfer after one year. I was not accepted into USC this year, but am really motivated to transfer. The avg. transfer gpa to USC is about 3.7 (which is pretty high).

Davis is a better school, academically, than UCSB, at least in recognition (more studious). However, I reaaally have no interest there. It’s a very chill place, and has a wonderful campus, but I am more of a laid back beach type person, or a city dweller. I don’t doubt Davis has a lot of activities, I just find it blase.

UCSB, for one year would be much more exciting since it’s farther/new.

As well, (this is just speculation) it’s a party school, and from what i’ve heard, their academics are still great, but students there choose whether to utilize the campus resources or just take things easy and have fun in college. Thus, would it be easier to get that 3.7 or greater gpa at SB? (Providing myself with an edge to get into USC). I believe I can remain focus at SB since my heart is set on USC.

Lastly, my third option is UW. I used to live there, so i’m comfortable with the environment, and can deal with the weather. I like the city life, but there is consideration of out of state tuition. And, if I planned on transferring to USC there would be no point in paying the out of state…

Sorry for such a long thread, but any advice/comments on transferring/the differences in campuses is much appreciated.

Thebay

I’m not sure about how this works myself as I am a senior too :), but from what I’ve seen most people who can’t afford or do not get into the school of their choice are going to their local community college then transferring. I think this is the best way to go as you can save the money for the expensive private school.
I don’t know why you want to be paying out of state tuition to a school that you’re planning to go to for one year, nor do I understand why you’re going to a UC if you’re going to transfer, especially if you think about the 32k you could be saving + it’d probably be easier to get a 3.7 at a CC than UC.

However, if you MUST go to one of these schools, it seems obvious that you have already set yourself on UCSB. :stuck_out_tongue: But in the end no matter where you go for your freshman year, if you’re transferring to USC, unless I’m wrong about this, your degree will say it’s from USC.

Sleepyrain,

I agree! That’s exactly my point, if I went to UW, I would stay there. So i’m weighing my options. It is confusing to go to a UC versus community if I plan on transferring. But it’s like, one I didnt apply to a cc, nor would it be in my interest. These 3 are the only schools I got into.

32k is a lot, but is the cheapest available to me.
I’ve described UCSB as what I’m leaning towards, but really, I’m not sure. I’m biased, and am seeing what other people think, objectively.

Thanks for the response

I have a decision between UCD and UCSB as well. I live in the Bay Area, so I’m in a similar situation with you.

I just attended UCD’s Decision Day. I must say that it was interesting - the campus is indeed very pretty - but I didn’t feel that there was anything noteworthy other than the school’s reputation as being more studious.

However, down in SoCal, UCSB is highly known as a great school, so I’m assuming the discrepancy is merely due to location bias. I’ve seen that many people in NorCal prefer Davis over SB, and many people in SoCal prefer SB over Davis.

UCSB = Party School?
Furthermore, regarding UCSB as a party school, that’s only due to location: it’s right next to the beach, and Isla Vista (a city adjacent to UCSB) is mainly controlled by students from UCSB and Santa Barbara Com.College. Yes, there are no doubt more parties there, but for every five ignorant posts that assume UCSB is a party school, I always follow the one post from the UCSB STUDENT who says, “Yeah, some people do party. But it isn’t shoved down your throat. If you’re looking for a party, you’ll find one - if you’re not, you won’t. This case is the same in any school.”
Point, any college is what you make of it. UCSB is only known as a party school because of its location. That has nothing to do with academics - for the sake of argument, if they were a purely party school, why is their academics competitive with those of Davis or Irvine? I find that the perception of UCSB being a party school overblown.

Money:
Don’t forget that a school out-of-state will cost more (tuition is set like that for every state - I can explain why if you wish). Furthermore, UC’s do give a good amount of financial aid to those who need it (but privates are starting to have a tendency to give more money). Check your financial aid packages for each school and weigh the differences.
Personally, the money from UCD and UCSB are equivalent (I have to pay the same amount for both schools), so, luckily, it’s not a money thing for me.

Education:
I doubt, however, it’ll be easier to get a GPA at SB. There are - granted - more “distractions” at SB. However, there’s no competition between students for spots or for prestige or anything, so I’m sure that the conducive environment will benefit you greatly. I didn’t get a much of a such environment at Davis, but I was told by a (an engineering) professor that, generally, students do work together more often than naught at Davis.

You do seem to like UCSB more in your initial post, and, if you’re only intending to stay for one year, why not stay at a “hotel” you’ll enjoy more?

I’m leaning toward UCSB a lot more than UCD. I really want to move away from the environment I live in now, and I feel UCSB is the ideal place (with the places I’ve been accepted to). Plus, their engineering is lauded constantly.

“Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services” is one of UCSB’s most popular majors according to U.S. News and World Report. Davis, I’m sure you already know, doesn’t have a “pre-business” major, but they do have this nifty PDF that I found about “Pre-Business” at UC Davis.

//Source: admissions.ucdavis.edu/info/Pre-Business.pdf

I would honestly pick UCSB - you seem click more with the laid back beach atmosphere, and they have the major that you’re looking for - whereas in UCD, you’re a certain major that’s completing prereqs for business school.

EDIT: One more thing:

Those are the profiles of UCSB and UCD from the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Scroll to: Performance in Academic Ranking of World Universities by Subject Fields. You can see that UCSB is rated in the 76-100 of the top 100 in Economics/Business, while Davis isn’t ranked at all.

Just maybe another thing to sway you.

StyxxNStones,
Sorry I never replied to this. I didn’t know how to find my own posts and was not subscribed to this post. But I’m back on CC and just read your post. Really great stuff. I ended up choosing UC Davis even though after reading what you wrote makes me cringe a little haha. Where did you end up going?
