UCD vs UCI

hey guys i was wondering if someone could compare these UCs. i need a list of general pros and cons. or really anything you know about the school that i wouldnt be able to find out by looking at the website. (party scene, campus life, things to do) Also i will most likely major in bio or psychology. so where would be the better place to go?

thanks!!

UCD = cowtown 8-)

UCD = Cowtown, Hot, Watertower, Huge, Get a Bike
UCI = It is known as University of Chinese Immigrants for a Reason

Go to UCSB.

In other words, I'm tired of comparing UCD to UCI...

UCD does have cows.. but the perception of it being a "cow town" is exaggerated. The only area of campus that smells of cow is the Tercero dorm area early in the morning/late at night because the dorms are adjacent to the dairy farm. UCD would more accurately be described as a bike town. I once heard a statistic that there were 1.4 bikes per capita in Davis - which basically means there are more bikes than people to ride them.

Davis has a small town/sub-urb feel to it. There are no sky scrapers, just lots of open space. You also have to drive outside of Davis to do any shopping (i.e. there is no shopping mall, target, walmart, etc in Davis). Everyone here is pretty laid back and not terribly wrapped up superficial things.

I've only been to Irvine once, and it was just a really quick trip so I can't tell you much about that UC

haha thanks guys. anyone else?

irvine ftw. can't beat the OC man...

Yeah unless you'e going to Berkeley, the name of the UC you attend doesn't really matter so go to UCSB.

Seriously go to UCSB. I have a bud who is going there (began this Fall) and he's told me that he's been having so much fun there partying and he told me I could visit him pretty much whenever I'd like. He's met so many people and has made so many friends that I'm seriously beginning to think that the people on these forums that have social problems at their respective universities are just whack.

UCSB for bio or pre-med/dental? would the party school rep hurt my chances of getting into a good grad school?

lol..the only thing that would hurt your chances of getting into a good grad school is 1) low GPA 2) low GRE/MCAT/etc 3) references, in that order. Don't be too narrow in your college search because you're too worried about grad school. I mean, it's great to plan ahead, but allow a little unpredictability so you're not bound to such a rigid path. But yeah. I'm a big fan of UCSB. Not so much UCI though. Have you considered other UCs? UCLA? CAL?

oh yes! i definitely want to go to UCLA, however im looking into my back-ups just in case i dont get in...it would really suck if i had my heart set on one college and i end up getting rejected then i would hate life no matter where i went. so just to be safe i want to get as much info as i can on my second and third choices.

bfired, you live in westwood? im jealous...lol do you go to ucla?

oh and why dont you like uci? and also i feel that i would be get a lower gpa at ucla vs ucd...but would it still be better overall to go to the more prestigious school??

Yes, I am a proud Bruin, newbie transfer from a community college, and am loving it. Sacrificing my first two years was very tough, but in the end, the degrees will look the same. UCI...well, I was admitted there as a freshman and my sister went did her undergrad there and is currently doing her pHD there, so I've been on campus quite a bit, especially because I have friends going there. I just don't like the feel of the campus, it's difficult to explain. At UCLA though, and even UCSB- it was electric. I knew I would enjoy myself.

Hm, on the lower GPA question. The answer is (in my opinion) very, very slightly. Well, it depends how much lower we're talking about here. Let's say two students from UCLA and Cal State Long Beach have identical GREs, but the Bruin's GPA is 3.5 while the Wave's (yes, that really is the mascot) GPA is 3.9. Obviously, the Wave's chances are much better. In the end, numbers count more than the name of the school. So, even though I plan to go to grad school, I know I have to work my butt off at UCLA to even compete with the best, and get a decent GPA. Strategically, it actually might be more beneficial for you to go to Davis, but the opportunities at UCLA are endless...so basically, no clear cut answer. lol good luck!

If you want to go to medical school then undergrad school doesn't really matter. If you want to go to Business school, then yes, school name does matter.

But UCSB is a ton of fun. But you're right actually, some employers think that UCSB students just partied throughout their four years and sometimes dont look at the degrees seriously. But of course a high GPA and some other resume stuff could offset that.

Having said this I rejected UCSB Business Economics because I thought I would get too carried away with the parties and because I was receiving some stigma about me wanting to go to a party school, and because I decided I would rather go to community college and transfer to Berkeley Haas. But I just want to do Applied Math or something quantitative at Berkeley now.

Everybody I know who has gone to Davis has had an excellent time there. They have a very strong bio program from what I here and a fairly diverse student population. Plus, they actually have a decent party scene and are good at athletics.

Go to Davis. Far superior to UCI.

And who the f%$K want to live in the OC? In Irvine? I'll take 40 min fromt eh Bay Area for sure.

Dude I wouldnt go to UCSB for under-grad. My dad knows someone who taught there as professor, and he claims, along with the fact that its a big party school, that the undergrad pop'n isn't focused on school, instead just partying. Unless you want this, I wouldnt go there. Mb consider it for grad school?

As for Irvine, I like it a lot when I was there. Beautiful campus: clean, many trees, everything's new, etc. It is also ranked pretty high compared to most of the other UC's. Only UCB and UCSD (i think, not sure) are ranked higher. UCI is ranked 40th nationally. not bad imo ;P
But I agree that most int'l ppl or even some out-ouf-state ppl won't recognize UCI, instead only UCB and UCSD prolly :O

UCSD (38) is ranked slightly higher than UCI (44) while UCLA (26) and Berkeley (21) are ranked much higher than UCI (44).

But it's true that many majors at UCSB such as communications only really care about partying.

oh yeah i forgot UCLA sorry ;o

thanks for the great responses everyone!! =)

peanut_butter read through this....

And for my opinion on the schools, UCSB is the best UC, so I would choose that school.

But since you asked for UCD vs. UCI, I would probably take UCI, bc of location. But I have not visited Davis so I'm not sure on it either.
