I used the financial aid calculator for UCD before I received my finaid award. With the calculator, it said 30k as my net price(OOS). However, when I received my award, it said something about being need based and so I basically got a full ride to UCD.
Would it be about the same for UCLA? My PAL and the calculator for UCLA also said I would have to pay around 30k but it also stated that it was an estimate?
Do all the UC’s calculate finaid the same way? How likely would it be for UCLA to also give me full aid like Davis?
Thank you!
Well, they keep reporting in the papers that NO financial aid is offered to out of state people and that is how they justify having so many spots available to only OOS and reject thousands of California tax payers children. So I am very surprised that you got a ‘full ride at UCD’. You should know in the next week or so if you get the same from UCLA.
I have heard of OOS people getting need aid, but not for the portion designated as oos tuition which is 23k. And there is usually around 8k loan + work study contribution from students so 30 is usual for OOS students at the minimum. Did you get a regents or other scholarship? Does the letter show 55k in total aid?
No, I would not expect that from UCLA. It is not usual and if Davis is making you a special offer, the likes of which I haven’t heard, then don’t expect the same from UCLA.
If you could copy and paste your award that would be helpful, we can comment and be sure it is as good as you are led to believe. Plus it may help posters in the futures.
Please copy paste your award. Something isn’t right. Was some of it a merit scholarship?
You aren’t supposed to get need based aid to cover the OOS portion.
What was your FAFSA EFC?
Before you accept, you need to contact the school to make sure that there wasn’t an error made and awarded aid would be withdrawn.
The total estimate for me is $57,124.00, final estimated aid is $53,624.00 where my EFC is $144 and student self help is $3,500 which I assume is where a campus job will come in play. At the top is says this
“Need-based financial aid is based upon the information provided on your FAFSA or Dream Act Application, and any additional documents submitted including outside resources. Federal, state and university funds are limited and subject to availability at the time they are offered. The amounts and types of aid are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice.” @jbourne @brownparent @mom2collegekids
@yellowwdaisies - What are the names of each of the specific grants (and loans) you’ve been awarded? Please provide us a complete list, along with the amounts for each. Thanks!
And if you don’t have time to do that right now, just tell us two things: Is a “Cal Grant” included in the list? What about a “PLUS” loan?
P.S. That $3,500 is expected to come from a summer job, not a campus job.
No Cal Grant. I thought that was only for California residents. The Plus loan and the University grant make up the bulk of the aid with 22k and 18k respectively @dodgersmom
A $22k Plus loan means that you didn’t get anything close to a full ride. Packaging huge plus loans like that with the FA award is very deceptive to those who are not well informed.
I called them and cleared it up. thank you all for your replies!
OK, we really aren’t trying to pry unduly, we are trying to make sure the aid is clear, having not seen the OOS portion of aid ever covered with grants before. And it looks like it isn’t.
So the university grant of 18k is great, that is gift aid.
Did Davis really put down a Plus loan? That is bad form. A plus loan is not gift aid, it is a suggested loan that you can take. You (if you are an independent student) or your parents (if you are a dependent student) would have to qualify for this loan. Now and each year. So that would put you in debt at $88,000 plus interest at graduation.
yeah. I shouldve called first. My family and I misunderstood what it was telling us and got a little excited haha. Thank you once again @brownparent
OK, well I can say now that it is possible you could get a full package from UCLA excepting the 22 or 23k for the OOS tuition. Not for sure but possible. I hope your applied to colleges that meet full need.
Yep, huge Plus loan . . . I was afraid of that.
