I heard that at UCF, you have to earn a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test to place into Calc II. How does this apply to the BC test? If I get a 4 will I have to take Calc I and Calc II or just Calc II?
I think they base your class on the math placement test. Have you taken that yet?
Yes and I placed in Calc I, but if I get a 5 on the AB subscore, I wouldn’t be happy about being placed into Calc I again since I’ve obviously mastered the course. My question is if I get a 4 on the Calculus BC test will that put me in Calc I or Calc II? Regardless of my MPT score since AP credit overrides that.
@omarrrr
What is your intended major?
@ufmomfriend sorry for the late response. My intended major is Chemistry
I’m only asking because I have heard that some students prefer to not take the credit for calc 1 because it is better to start from the beginning if you are required to continue on the calc series thru 2 and 3. Please don’t take this wrong and I’m not diminishing the intensity of AP, but unfortunately, mastering calc 1 in an AP class may not be the same as mastering calc 1 at ucf…but I don’t know this for sure, just throwing it out there. Perhaps a current student can address this.
Check the catalog specifically for your major to see if they accept the credit for AP and/or if they suggest doing the entire series starting at calc 1.
You can always call the department directly and of course you will be advised on specific classes during your orientation and registration in the summer.
Hope this helped, but I don’t think I actually answered your question.
Go Knights!!
@omarrrr
This probably goes without saying, but don’t forget your chem placement test.
Good luck!!!
@ufmomfriend Haha don’t worry I completely understand where you are coming from! The only reason I really want the credit is because it will help me try to graduate in 3 years instead of 4 but I guess it’ll have to wait till orientation. Thank you!!
Unfortunately, the stars might have to align perfectly to get all your classes to align with the prerequisites and such.
Are you in Burnett?
@ufmomfriend I am!
@omarrrr
Congrats! That will help the celestial alignment because of early and multiple registration. Please keep in mind that you will have to meet Burnett mandatory honors classes requirement. It was pretty easy to do with kid’s political science major, but has been a challenge with kid’s economics major.
They will also help you with this during summer orientation/registration. They will sign off on all your classes, but if I can offer you a tidbit of knowledge, after they sign off, you can always go back and make changes to your schedule. They will try to limit you to 2 honors classes. If you are trying to graduate early, you may want to try to add an extra one if it fits in. Also know that you will be registering much earlier than those not in Burnett and ucf does not open all sections of all classes at once. That is to say if you can’t get a class you need or want, there is always a chance extra sessions will open at each orientation event. Stay informed when these happen so you can grab what you need. I know this was off topic from your original post, but I
Hope this helps a little.
@ufmomfriend that actually helps a lot because I was contemplating if I should even register for all my classes during orientation because I’m going in June but I’ll have to change my classes anyway after AP scores come put in July if I get high enough scores on AP Calculus BC
Definitely grab any classes you can during orientation. You will be able to register for fall and spring.
Take a list of all AP or DE classes even if you don’t have scores. Personally I would go ahead and send ucf any of the scores you already have, yes this will cost $, but you will start to see your gen ed classes getting checked off on your knights audit and it will help you plan a schedule.
You can go into orientation with a good idea of what you want to take and when and try to force the issue…at least now you know you can walk out of there and just simply change what the advisor "makes " you do…lol…of course with the exception of prerequisites and such.
You will learn that an advisor, not necessarily the one at orientation, has a lot of power to help make things happen for you…but you must ask. Rex is also very good as a sounding board and can be very helpful in getting the honors classes you need…but once again, you must ask…lol.
I hope this helps.
Let me know how it goes.
Feel free to ask me any questions that a mom to 2 knights might know.
Go Knights !
@ufmomfriend Is it just honors that can register for Fall and Spring or will every incoming Freshman be able to? My D is in IB- so she will have the same problem of registering before she gets scores. I was wondering if she could over schedule- ie: English Comp1 plus 5 other classes, just to make sure she gets the class and then drop after she gets her scores.
@ufmomfriend okay cool! I already have last year’s AP scores sent to UCF because they made me send them before I could enroll so we’ll just have to wait on this year’s. But thank you! You’ve been really helpful and I definitely might contact you in the weeks leading up to or after orientation if I need an opinion besides that of the UCF staff lol. Thanks a bunch!
Look up professors on “rate my professors”
It can be enlightening
@jeneric
Most students can only register for one semester at a time. A few groups, like Burnett students get to register over multiple semesters.
Orientation advisers should be very used to dealing with AP/IB/DE scores coming in late. Make sure she takes a list and she could try to get as many as possible, but I think there is a credit hour limit per semester. Remember, more sessions can open up at each orientation, so keep track of when they are scheduled and update her registration then. YOU WILL NOT be able to change her schedule while orientation is in process…they kinda freeze everything so those in that scheduled orientation can have an equal opportunity to get the classes they need…
Make sense??
@ufmomfriend Makes perfect sense! Thanks for all your help!
