UCF Decision

Do they only allow 2 knightforum? D was planning on 3. Would this be too much? We have been looking and planning all weekend for tomorrow’s orientation. Due to the system upgrade (I am assuming mistake), it let us enroll in both summer and fall classes and even gives us an invoice for summer. I am wondering if we lucked out, or are in for problems. Can’t hurt to try anyway I guess.

I am not sure alongwait. I emailed an advisor earlier with the same question. I am hoping for 3 or 4. At orientation all they told us was to register for 2… I don’t think that is the max though.

I will make sure I ask that question tomorrow as well. Thanks!

alongwait, I saw late this week that D could enroll online but we were hesitant. She does not have orientation until 6/25 so please let me know how things worked out tomorrow by enrolling early.

A full course load is two classes for summer and five classes for Fall. I do NOT recommend taking more than two classes for summer B. Each 6 week summer session is an entire semester (12 weeks) compressed into 6. My daughter was fine taking the 6 credits/2 classes of GEN eds last summer. This summer she is taking ONE class that is 4 credits and she spends every waking minute that she is not in class, studying. It all depends on what classes you choose but 2 classes for your FTIC is plenty.
Also, if you are planning to rush/recruitment for a frat or sorority in August, don’t take more than 4 classes (12 credits) for Fall. You are considered full time with 12 credits. Rush/recruitment is a time eating commitment. It is wonderful. My daughter loves being in a sorority and has no regrets, but the first two months (after getting a bid) but before “initiation” is very time intensive. It was tough learning how to juggle hard classes and social life in Fall semester.

Thanks for your input, seiclan. That was my general thought process, but D was on the fence on that 3rd course. And JSM, I am somewhat curious to see what happens myself when (or if) they see the classes already listed on her myucf. Will let you know!

I got a response from my advisor and it was strongly recommended that I take no more than 6 credit hours in the summer. I will take this advice and stick with 6.

I asked the advisors about taking more than 2 classes in the summer. Yes, they discourage it! Although you are technically allowed to take more if you want, it is strongly suggested that this is NOT the way to begin a college career. Getting used to the campus, being successful in your classes and adjusting to the area/college is of utmost importance to UCF. Not being overwhelmed and stressed out. JSM-as far as registering for the classes early- noone even looked at D’s selections on the computer. Once she showed them that she had a good idea of what she was doing and wanted to take, they told her she was good to go. Then, all the computers went down and were unavailable for ANYONE to sign up when it came time. Some of the people were VERY upset! Lucky for us, we had done this ahead of time…so it worked out.

She got lucky. I was changing some classes today and it said that registration is down until 4. Even though registration is down you can still swap classes… which was helpful for me.

There is one available ENC class but the lecture notes say “SOAR”

Can anyone sign up?

I would wait until your orientation to see. There are other ENC 1101 classes that are not open yet that should open during your orientation. I believe that SOAR is only for those in the SOAR program.

When you say you’re offered summer admission, and then continue in the fall, does that mean that you start right after you graduate high school, or is that after you take a gap year, then start in the summer after what would have been your freshman year?

After graduation. Summer B classes start on August 29, 2009 this year.

Yes, summer B admission starts within a month after graduation. If you start in the summer, you only take 2 courses, then continue on to the Fall to take a regular course load. It is a little easier to get accepted to UCF if applying to start in the summer and you get a little ahead of the game, so to speak. Plus, it helps you get used to the campus, etc.

Summer B starts on June 29 this year and ends on August 7th (though most classes are done on Thursday, August 6th.

My D is OOS and starting in Summer. She is graduating HS tomorrow and we are flying in Tuesday for Orientation and she will start classes on 6/29. She is moving in to her dorm room early (6/24). She will take 2 classes, fly home on 8/7, then fly back down (move in early on 8/17) for “rush” week and start classes on 8/24. She won’t be back home until Thanksgiving but we will fly down in October for Parents Weekend.

At first she was hesitant, didn’t want to start college so soon after graduating (she wanted to spend her “last summer” with her friends here) but right now she cannot wait to get down there, meet new people, make new friends and get involved at UCF.

Sorry I don’t know why I put August… I meant June.
