UCF or FSU?

Which school is better/more highly regarded for English and Philosophy? AND IN GENERAL? I plan to attend grad school, and I want to go to the more well regarded institution. Thank you!

As a side note, I plan to go to either's honor college. I also received the $9,600 from FSU.

Most people outside the state of Florida would not know what the initials UCF stand for. If UCF has a major that FSU does not offer then consider going there. With the money offered and the much greater name recognition FSU seems to be the obvious choice.

The more ‘well regarded’ institution doesn’t matter much any more, and what’s beginning to matter if the amount of portfolio materials, which UCF graduates leave with a lot of. I’m not exactly sure how English is in terms of portfolios, but I know they’re the main reason that UCF is the number 2 Video Game Designing / Programming school in the nation, and has the best regarded Engineering and Computer Science programs in Florida with the work force and many grad schools.

At least, that’s how science is, so skeets doesn’t know much about UCF if he thinks people OOS don’t know what it is. As someone with a lot of family OOS urging me to choose UCF over other schools, I’d beg to differ :stuck_out_tongue: If English doesn’t have much in the way of portfolio formation, then it probably either matters where you’ll be happiest, or where is the most prestigious, because neither of those fields have much in the way of ‘concrete evidence’ showing things that you know.

Hope I could help, sorry I couldn’t be more in depth with your fields. FSU was my 2nd or 3rd choice school personally, UCF my first.

If you want to major in video game design by all means go to UCF. Video game design is one of the things UCF would be known for outside of the state of Florida to people hiring in that field. I stand by my assertion that for name recognition Florida State is much better known, overall, than UCF in most areas of the country and for most fields of study.

Whether or not UCF is less known is VERY debatable, since I’ve only heard mention of FSU’s football team outside of Florida, and nothing else. Having lived elsewhere, before coming to Florida, all I’d known about FSU was that they were into football, and that’s really all my family outside of Florida still knows XD

Ignoring all of that though, better known doesn’t necessarily know better, and the name recognition shouldn’t be much of a factor in choosing your school, especially with how rapidly the ‘rankings’ change. Last year’s 4-year UCF graduates went in when it was a tier 3 school, and graduated from a top 200 college, which is consistently rising. The climate when you graduate will most likely be VERY different than the one when you enter.

The cost of FSU in-state is $5238 for 2010-2011, and at UCF it’s $4526, so the grant from FSU does offer you a better deal, since the average debt of a UCF grad is $17,044 and an FSU grad is $19,364.

Therefore, within this case, it seems like it’d be up to where you feel you’d fit in the best. Both colleges provide the same great opportunities, but with the scholarship, FSU will be a slightly better deal for you. If you want to go off of the rankings now, then FSU will be a better choice, but I’d advise against that, because in 2015, your grad schools won’t care much about the 2010 rankings, and at the rate UCF has been growing, it won’t be near the same.
