My daughter applied to UCF a few weeks ago. She checked her application status today and found out she’d been deferred. She qualifies for the UCF Top Ten Knights program, which we thought would guarantee her admission. Has anyone else been deferred who qualified for Top Ten Knights? Her stats are very good - ACT score is 33, weighted GPA is 4.9, many AP classes and awards and in the top 3% of her class. Although she put her application in somewhat late, we felt good about her getting an acceptance based on her qualifying for admission under this program. Anyone else have something similar happen?
I’m surprised she was deferred (assuming her unweighted GPA is 3.5 or higher). UCF has an active forum, and you can compare her stats to other kids that have been accepted.

You can always contact UCF and appeal, sometimes mistakes happen. Even though she likely will be admitted later, earlier is better as it improves her chances at merit scholarships.
Good Luck!
Yes, her weighted GPA is 3.8. We were surprised as well. We emailed them last night and are waiting to see if there is something we missed. Thank you.
This level of stats would get her into the UCF Honors College, FSU Honors College or UF. There must have been a mistake in the application that flagged it. Maybe she inserted the “why UF or FSU” essay by accident instead of the “why UCF” essay.
Clearly a mistake and if not go elsewhere. UCF doesn’t exactly have the reputation of a hard place to get into.
Surprised here too. I would definitely contact them.
Thank you all for the input. That was my thinking as well. She has gotten Honors College acceptances and scholarship offers at UNF and LSU (with the LSU offer being a very generous out-of-state offer, basically full tuition, room and board, etc., even an offer for employment on campus). She has applied to FSU and UF, but put her applications in a little late, so she won’t get those decisions until the second wave of acceptances. I will call UCF this afternoon.
Realized I made a typo - her “unweighted” GPA is 3.8, her weighted is 4.9
I consistently hear very bad things about UCF. If she gets into FSU or UF it is worth the drive from Orlando to go there. Take it for what it is worth. UCF doesn’t have much school spirit even amongst the people that go there who only seem to go there because they lack the ambition to go to Tally or G-Ville. Again, take that for what it is worth.
I disagree @GoNoles85. I was very surprised by who from daughter’s HS ended up at UF, FSU and UCF, and that those at UCF love it so much. I don’t get it, I don’t like Orlando, but they all seem to love UCF.
I’ve known a couple of students from south Florida who loved UCF too.
For some reason (?) my son did not apply and looking back I think he should have, just in case UF didn’t come through and he didn’t want to go OOS.
Most of the kids I know at UCF love it. They are all Fort Lauderdale kids.
You Can’t Finish. That is what the locals call UCF. It might depend on the program. For engineering and computer sciences I hear good things. I’ll keep the rest of what I hear to myself unless anyone wants to PM me. I am an FSU grad so I am not completely objective perhaps. I think what people from out of town like about UCF is Orlando/Winter Park, everyone loves Orlando, as far as I am concerned.
Update: My daughter called UCF, and they mistakenly had it down that she only had three English credits and not four? They updated her admissions status and she is officially accepted. UCF is on her short list, but we’re still waiting to hear from FSU and UF, as she got those applications in late. Thank you all for the input.
Wow, that phone call was totally worth it, legalmom! It did seem odd given her stats.
Wow @gonoles85. I cannot disagree more with what you said. Both of my kids attend ucf…both were accepted at fsu and uf but chose ucf. Each is well on their way to graduate in less than 4 years and neither has had any difficulty getting the classes they need. Both are actively involved and very happy with their choice. Neither has a deep appreciation for the city of orlando itself, but picked ucf because it offered strong academics and programs , countless research and internship possibilities at world class companies, amazing housing, unlimited extracurriculars, a beautiful campus and a great honors college. Ucf is a wonderful university and a great place to thrive.
Go knights!!!
