UCF - Under Construction Forever. PLEASE READ

Hey so I know UCF is constantly constructing new buildings. I was already accepted and will be attending in Spring 2011 but sadly, I can't tour the campus just yet. (I will in december if I can) Anyways, does the construction throw off students? I know the campus is beautiful but having empty spaces with construction going on, does it make it ugly in some way? Are there constant annoying sounds coming from constructions? Overall, how does it affect the students?

Thank you so much, everyone says this campus is truly beautiful I'm just wondering how construction affects it ;)

I just went on Saturday and I only saw one place that was under construction but it wasn’t really like in the middle of things. I didn’t seem to notice it except when I passed it like once. It’s kinda far off . The campus really is beautiful!

Thank you! Any one else feel free to give me your opinion, please :D

Eiram - nothing ugly at all about UCF. Construction is limited to specific areas that went completely unnoticed when we visited last Friday. In fact, as we were walking I commented to my son at how beautiful the campus is. Really cool set-up too with pool/gym in one section; stadium/sports in another. The best part is the high energy vibe.

Thank you LBJRomMom, I’m dying to see it already!! How is the touring process? I don’t get it, can you just go there and see or do you have to make appointments or something? My aunt will take me in December 7, right after arriving at Florida :)

They have a few open houses throughout the year, which is a bit more informative because they have members from the various colleges talk about their programs. But you can tour the campus Mon-Friday either at 10am or 2 pm. They definitely recommend signing up for a tour because they close out after a certain number of reservations. The campus tour provides a brief overview session then a walk around the campus with a student ambassador. You can also piggyback the housing tour after the campus tour. You can sign up easily on line for the daily campus/housing tours; [UCF Undergraduate Admissions - Visit UCF](Visit Campus | UCF Undergraduate Admissions Tours & Open Houses). Sounds like you’re from out of state - you’re going to love it.

Yeah like she said they have campus tours and open houses.I went to the open house which is like all day 9-3. Like she said it’s more informative and includes the housing tour.

You guys have been so helpful thank you!
Sadly, I can’t do the open house because of the dates but I will sign up for a tour!
Other than that, can I walk around campus if I’m not on a tour? I’ll arrive in FL at 9am, so I’ll have to do things in the airport pretty quick to be able to get to the tour on time. But assuming I end up going at a later hour, let’s say I arrive at 12pm at the campus, am I allowed to just walk around and see before the tour starts at 2? Or are there strict security rules?

Haha, sorry I’m asking so much!
And yes, LBJRomMom, I’m from Puerto Rico :)

You could walk around all you want and nobody will tell a difference. People would probably just think you are a student. There’s no strict security rules like you’d see in grade school, all kinds of people roam around campus. It’s not going to be as busy as it usually is on that date because it’s a Final Exam date but there’s still going to be plenty of people around.

It is a rather big campus but it has a really good design and is easy to navigate. While it’s true that there’s always construction going on, it’s confined to certain areas and hasn’t really bothered me.

Parking is a pain in the morning and early afternoon.

I’m not sure if the Tour takes you guys inside some of the classroom buildings but I’d definitely recommend roaming some of the halls. I usually see the tour people around the reflection pond most of the time. Depending on your major, you might want to check out certain buildings. For instance, I’m a math major so I’ve had tons of classes in the Math and Physics building which isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing location. It’s one of the older buildings and there’s no windows in the classrooms. But if you know you’re going to be a business major then check out the Business Administration buildings. If you know you’re going to be an Engineering major, check out the Engineering buildings because you’re bound to spend most of your time there, etc.

Have fun on your visit and feel free to ask me any other questions if you wish.

What are some of the strong majors here?

PWGuerilla Thank you so much for your help and information =D I will study Marketing but that’s subject to change. Considering you took math, maybe you could answer me this question. If I score really poorly on the Math Placement, is there anyway I can just take all those prereq. classes until I get to the one I need for my major? I took the math placement yesterday and I’m waiting for the scores but I know I did REALLY bad. The thing is the majority of things there are things I’ve never even seen or heard of in my life. I need to take Pre-calculus for my major but I called and they say most people in Marketing start with College Algebra and then move on to Pre-calc. But I’m afraid I did way worse than that…

Anyways yeah I’ll walk around campus and look around the halls and everything  Parking won’t be a problem for me because I won’t have a car LOL! The campus is so huge I might just need a bike or something but we’ll see.

Thank you!!

Yeah they won’t even know if you signed up or not. Haha I was stressing about it because I was going to bring more people than I listed- but I ended up not doing so. My mom was like “we could have brought however many people we wanted!” Haha. You only go up and give your name at this table they have in the student union, but if you come late they have no way of remembering/knowing if you ever signed in or not. So just tagg along, get a schedule and see what’s going on :)

As far as math classes it’s pretty much how you thought it will be. You will have to start from where ever you placed until you reach what you need for your major. Don’t worry about doing poorly, considering you said that you hadn’t seen much of the material before. You probably will start at college algebra, or I think there might be a beginning algebra below that if you actually scored that low lol but don’t worry too much about that.

Eiram - they have a visitors center that will provide you a map of the campus. Just like everyone else says, you can walk around campus; have lunch at one of the restaurants, walk into the buildings and spend some money in the bookstore getting your UCF wear! No worries, plenty to do to kill time before the 2pm tour.

Thank you all for your information!!!

I hope the math test isn’t as big of a deal as I’m making it

I currently go to UCF and yes, there is lots of construction, but it’s not very noisy or anything (the gym is currently being renovated and I live nearby and I’m never disturbed by the noise). Also, construction is relatively fast and doesn’t drag on for the most point from what I’ve seen. It’s noticeable, but not particularly ugly. They also just renovated the main floor on the library.

Strong majors at UCF would be engineering, psychology (popular), and their Optics and Lasers major (unique).
