Hey, we’re all UChicago hopefuls (except mifune) – it’s only expected :P

On a serious note, though, I must say that I regret having spent as much time as I did playing the game. The significant opportunity costs aside, I found the game utterly desensitizing and, further, that my playing for enjoyment had degraded to a practice marked by more competitive drives and, indeed, addiction.

Actually, there is currently a proposition for the inclusion of electronic game addiction in the next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. I certainly feel that it is a worthy candidate. After all, those who play frequently, compulsively, and fervently clearly demonstrate a detrimental tendency to desensitize themselves to broader contexts.

I once heard that there was a teenage boy in Japan who played online games non-stop for 3 days. He didn’t pause to eat or sleep. Eventually, he keeled over and died – just like that. I’m not sure how true this story is, but it definitely says something about the adverse effects of online gaming :/

^ Not to understate the obvious but that sounds very unfortunate.

^ Indeed it is. Hence why I believe that gaming addictions are legitimate disorders… did you know that in China, a country that has more internet users than the United States has people, there are some clinics that are specifically dedicated to providing therapy and treatment for people who are addicted to online gaming to harmful extents? I found that very interesting… I was reading about them in a Chinese magazine while visiting Beijing a year ago.

No, I was not aware of that. But due to the conditions you stated, it certainly sounds like a plausible business specialty.

Bumping this thread up since the Fall 2011 admissions season is quickly approaching…!

Good luck guys! Work hard on those essays.

Does anyone know if UChicago has released their supplement essays for next year yet? I’ve looked but I can’t seem to find them anywhere…

^ If you can’t find them, then I doubt they’re up so early. You can start working on their supplement essays that don’t change from year to year (I think, at least): the “favorites” essay and the “Why Chicago” one.

Do I have to one or both? Thanks for the info overachiever.

^

From their website:

I also found the full essay prompts.

How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to Chicago. Recommended 1-2 paragraphs

Would you please tell us about a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, pieces of music, musicians, performers, paintings, artists, magazines, or newspapers? Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed, or add a category of your own. 1-2 paragraphs

Good luck guys! Work hard on these essays.

^ Muchas gracias :D

Last year the supplemental essays were up on July 1st, so you have a ten day wait.

I just decided to apply today, actually. For some reason I thought the school required SAT IIs (I refuse to take them. I am done done done(!!) with standardized testing) so I crossed it off my list.

Then I was delighted to find a lot of the decision is based off of essay, which I have already started (the common app one).

Good luck, everyone!

The supplements were made available by email today, and they’re freaking fantastic. I think that this is the best batch as of yet. I’m excited, I finally have something to focus on besides my SAT scores.

^ did you have to create an account first to receive the supplements??

And wow, i can’t believe it’s finally the time when i post something on this type of thread. everything’s going by so quickly :(

^They were emailed to people on their mailing list. But they’re posted in that other thread now.

This year’s topics are fantastic.
