My D could not find the interview option either.
uchicago .edu home > Admissions & Aid > Undergraduate, Apply to the College > Visiting > Interviews
@CuriousBobby @chihero I called them a few days ago, they said the option to interview was no longer available and hasn’t been since like last Friday at the least. It’s optional though so don’t worry, I feel like its more of a way for you to ask them questions than the other way around!
Hmmm… So the option to request an interview did show up for a while, for regular decision applicants, after January 1, and then it went away; is that right? My kid’s friend, who applied RD, checked a few times, and it wasn’t ever there on the days she checked. Also, the UChicago rep on College Confidential told people to just be patient about the portal. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/20215484/#Comment_20215484 . So she waited. Too bad if she’s now missed her chance for an interview. She is one of those kids whose first choice is definitely UChicago, but her parents wouldn’t let her apply ED because of the (small) chance she will get a bit merit scholarship at the very expensive (and less preferred) out-of-state school to which she applied. She thought an interview it might have been an opportunity (in addition to the Why Chicago essay) to show how strong her interest is.
I wonder if this portends ill for RD applicants - not even worth interviewing them?
Also, I submitted my UChicago supplement through the common app, but under the forms section of my online portal, there is still an optional form there for me to submit a supplement. What does this mean?
@CuriousBobby don’t worry about that. UChicago gave people the option of uploading the supplement via their UChicago account. If you submitted via CA then they should have it. You can check your Common Application account to make sure of that, by the way - there will be a date stamp for when they downloaded it on their end.
@Lea111 They are definitely giving out interviews for RD applicants. Mine’s this Saturday, but I requested one several days before the deadline so that might be why.
I’m surprised people were waiting for information on their portals about requesting an interview. I looked up interview info on the site itself. Nothing anyone can do now though, I suppose.
Curious what you’re talking about?
My DD successfully requested her alumni interview through the portal last fall, and we weren’t aware of any other way to do it.
Here’s the website page we were looking at:
https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visiting/interviews/alumni
It specifically says to request the interview through the portal, and doesn’t mention any other way to do it. And in fact there are other places on the website where Chicago asks applicants not to harass the admissions officers about things like whether all of your documents were received - essentially, “be patient; we’ll let you know if there are any issues”. So DD’s friend assumed that the portal link just hadn’t gone active yet, especially since others on CC were reporting the same problem. (Some schools don’t allow you to request an interview for a while after your application has been submitted. Every school is different, and obviously, she hadn’t applied to Chicago before so didn’t know what to expect. So she just followed the directions.) Also, looks like on-campus interviews continue through February, so it’s not crazy to have assumed that alumni interviews would do so as well.
Ok, my bad. I must be remembering incorrectly.
My D applied RD and requested an interview through the portal but hasn’t been contacted yet. Maybe they are focusing on the ED2 applicants first. We live in a major city so there should be alums available. We are not worried about it yet.
My parents wouldn’t let me apply ED but they eventually came around to the idea… Is there a way I can change my decision plan from regular to ED?
@LibLib84 From the UChicago applicant portal:
LibLib, please let us know if admissions will allow you to switch to ED2 at this point. I figured the deadline had passed. If so, you are still sending a positive signal by asking. So give it a shot and let us know their response please.
EDII gets decisions mid-February so if you’re switching you should hurry since they’re probably already done reviewing some of the applications
Since I missed the interview request deadline, I am considering emailing my regional admissions rep to request an interview… is this a smart idea? What should I put in my email?
@CuriousBobby I’m not sure that’s a great idea. You can try, but admissions reps are really busy this time of year, and sometimes interviews are conducted independent of the admissions office so they have no say over that.
I’m not sure that’s sound advice. Remember a component to the selection criteria is “UChicago fit / desire to be there” and that’s about the only thing you can impact at this point.
But at the same time a lot of interviews have already happened, and I don’t know how much the adcoms would be able to do.
Just wanted to give a quick update saying that I was contacted for an interview today and I applied Regular Decision. So, if anyone is waiting for an interview and hasn’t heard back yet, don’t lose hope!
