UChicago Class of 2024 EA / ED

Hi guys, figured I would make a thread so we can stress together.

Does anyone know long it takes after submitting the common app to get a link from UChicago to set up a UChicago account?

@bear19 I think I got mine like 3 or 4 days later. Although you can make an account before you submit the common app and then link it later.

Let’s stress then!
Shout-out to all the international students out there

Hi everyone! Can’t wait to get my rejection letter from UChicago ?

Nickgaj- why is that?

Heyyy Pylyrka, how are ya? I’m also an international and have applied for the Uchicago ED 1! And man, congrats on your IB scores, man that was nailed… Hey if you can, I wanted to just see my weird essay’s I submitted, my artworks oh and a short song I uploaded on my Uchicago account. I’ll be so glad to hear from you!

@kaukauna because it’s a hard school and I’m probably not qualified

Hey nickgaj - thanks. All the best to you. I had a son at UChicago ('17 graduate). He didn’t think he would get in either. Do your best with the app. Let your true self be expressed through your essays.

Please man, I would love to

What department are you applying to?

Mark.and.colleges@gmail.com

thanks for the thread. applied ED1, just counting down the days til i get that sweet sweet rejection

Anyone applying to the Department of Mathematics?

^ You don’t apply to a major - just to the College. You are free to have plans, not to have plans, or keep your options open on what you will eventually major in. Also, your major will take up only about 1/3 of your total credits (sometimes a bit more, depending on the specific course of study and/or whether you are opting for a BS). As an example, the Math BA is 1400 credits (out of 4200 required for graduation) and the Math BS is 1700. The Computational and Applied Mathematics major (BS only) is 1800.

Read all about it here; click the specific major links for details: http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/programsofstudy/

Thank you, Sir, I am very well aware of how US colleges let you keep your major undecided for the first year and how the point system at UChicago works. But taking your corrections into consideration, I’ll rephrase: “Who is planning to take Maths as his/her major at Uchicago upon admission?”

@Pylyrka, you are not getting it as @JBStillFlying tries to educate you. The Core requires you to take a broad range of classes in the first two years. If you are one of the selected few, you may take the hellish Math 207-208-209 Honors Analysis in first year and then start Math 257-258-259 Honors Basic Algebra in second year. With these two killer math sequences and the Core requirement, you would have little time to do much else in Math.

In other words, if UChicago is your type of school, you need to embrace the Core first and work your major along side with it, especially during the first and second year.

@Pylyrka at #13: Actually, some US universities do, indeed, have you at least apply to one of several available colleges for your major of interest. For instance, an applicant might have to figure out whether to pursue STEM as a liberal arts discipline or a more technical degree program, since the major might be offered in two or more colleges. The nice thing about UChicago and other similar liberal arts undergraduate programs is that you do NOT have to have all these decisions figured out before applying. They understand that many kids change their minds once they arrive on campus. The flip side of that equation is that applicants aren’t necessarily evaluated for specific major of interest; all else equal, being one of 20,000 math or econ hopefuls might actually hurt your chances.

Did anyone else submit the optional two minute video? I did, and I pretty much just answered a couple of interview questions. It wasn’t super creative.

i did the video too- expanding on something i’d brought up in my common app essay. they’ll probably be cool with anything as long as it shows them something about you, since it is pretty vaguely phrased. or so i hope

@pig333 & @threechimneys can the videos be about anything?? I was a little confused on what to talk about in the video. Also is it too late to submit a video response if I’m applying EA

@nickgaj the video can pretty much be about anything, yeah. it’s useful for them to put a face to your name and also to show any additional facets of your application you might not have had the chance to tell them about yet (like some really obscure knife juggling talent or something, idk). and apparently (source: reddit) someone emailed an AO yesterday and they said you could still submit the video, but if you do want to do it i’d suggest you do it asap. as long as you get it in before they read your app you’ll probably be aight
