Regarding the Work Study question, I spoke to FA this morning and “Work Study” at UChicago is definitely a federal program. Fed. gov’t subsidizes the employer, and work study money, though subject to federal (and state?) taxes, is actually reported separately on your tax return so that it doesn’t count as income for FAFSA purposes. There is a max of 20 hours per week but no minimum and work study jobs are very flexible w/r/t midterms, finals, papers, etc. that are due. Some students work a minimum of 4-5 hours once a week so they are flexible in terms of the number of overall hours you wish to work. I didn’t verify this question but the website had mentioned that there are plenty of work-study jobs available on campus so here’s to hoping that my D17 can find something that works for her.
