@HydeSnark oh gosh, no! Absolutely, would never ever do that. I am really sorry.
@SaltH20 Haha, you don’t have to apologize; it’s just not particularly representative of anything. Both meme pages are just the same 10 or 20 people making jokes, it says almost nothing about what life is life at UChicago.
We just got back from visiting DC for spring break and taking a look at Georgetown, my son is deciding between GU and Berkeley.
Both great options!
@Warrenless My daughter was accepted in EA, and weeks after (before she accepted to go) received the letter announcing the merit scholarship of 15K per year. It was a total shock bc we did not know that UChicago gave them.
She was waiting for few more acceptances in RD (she was accepted in Columbia, Cornell, UPenn, Duke, Vanderbilt, and others), but UChicago was always her favorite, and she already made her decision. We are visiting this week.
Wow, that is great!! My S decided to attend UVa with a Jefferson Scholarship and maybe sometime in the future will be at UChicago but no debt for undergrad was something he couldn’t refuse! Best wishes to your D, what a beautiful campus!
Hello everyone. We just received D FA package and it is extremely generous. It includes work study, which I think is a wonderful thing because it will get her connected on campus and working is good. But, I was wondering if anyone knows how you actually get a job on campus?
My S also received work study. We thought it was the traditional approach (you are guaranteed work on campus, and it could be any type of work you’re assigned to at any of the facilities). We asked, and at least what they listed for work study for us is not the federal program people are used to. They don’t guarantee you’ll get it, and you aren’t assigned a job. You apply for any of their open jobs, along with all other students who are interested, and it isn’t guaranteed. However, they said there were so many jobs, that virtually anyone who wants one, gets one. Essentially, they mean they expect the kid to find a job on campus (or elsewhere) to contribute toward their educational costs. I’m not sure if yours is the same, but ours is just listed on the FA package as: work study. You can always call FA to verify if it’s the same in your case.
@myoldest interesting. Thank you. It is listed on hers as Federal Work/Study Program…? Do you know if that different?
While my daughter’s work study is a nice offer, we figured that the amount she would have to work per week to make that amount would be about 15 hours. That seems a bit much for first year. She is considering taking out a Stafford loan instead, perhaps doing a combination of work study and loans amounting to her original work study amount. A lot depends on whether she gets any money for national merit, as that scholarship would be reducing her work study.
@Warrenless Thank you! Best wishes for your son as well! UVA is a great school, in a beautiful campus with a fantastic student body! Our kids are so lucky!!!
@luckyshanrock I don’t remember if it said federal or not, and he isn’t here to check. I’ve found the aid/merit offers to be pretty confusing (much more so than for all other schools where he was offered scholarships and aid), so honestly, it’s best to call and ask exactly what your child was offered. But, I’ll have my kid check the portal later and let you know. I’m sure it clearly said “work study”. I can’t remember if “federal” was before it.
@luckyshamrock My son’s just says “work study”, so if yours says “federal” it is probably a different program.
Does anybody know how many kids get merit scholarships from UC? I know that they give 5, 10 and 15K, but I will like to know the percentages…
@JBStillFlying interesting. Thank you for your thoughts. Now I’m wondering if it’s Federal Work/Study Program if she has the option NOT to do it if she feels it is too much to handle…
Can I get a sugar mama professor at UChicago?
Not sure if it’s work study or federal work study or what-have-you. However, you can always decline any portion of the FA offered regardless of whether it’s a federal program or school-sponsored one. My D17 isn’t working 15 hours per week, even if she gets no scholarship.
I just want to say “CONGRATULATIONS!!!” to all the admitted students to UChicago.
My daughter attended the overnight visit, and we are just amazed. What an amazing and spectacular campus, incredible people, fantastic programs…wow…unbeliavable!!! As they said, “Maroon is the new crimson”
In our day the expression was Harvard: the University of Chicago of the east.
For anyone who went to the overnight, would you please share what where some of your favorite things?
