@fakemonk i definitely know people who were rejected RD. they don’t benefit from using waitlist as a rejection, it really is to protect yield and admission numbers. I’ve heard things like “oh they waitlist you so that you think you were so close and then you tell all your friends and more people apply next year” but really thats too much speculation (not only on our part as students but on the adcom’s part if they REALLY were doing this).
I’m pretty sure they waitlisted so many students because the honest truth is that a large proportion of UChicago applicants will do well at their school. And because of that, there are a) not enough spaces and b) a high chance that a lot of these students may choose to attend another equally prestigious institution. By waitlisting they first make sure that they wont overenroll, and second they weed out the kids who didn’t have Chicago as their first choice (to up their yield).
BTW for all wondering about the LOCI and the replies: I emailed mine in yesterday (after uploading it on the portal a couple weeks ago). I have an email tracker and so I know she’s opened it twice, but she hasn’t responded yet. I’m sure it’s a super busy time for the adcom and so don’t fret too much! I’m pretty sure your AOs have seen your emails
I’m International, too!
Applied for aid and also opted for gap year option.
I do know people who got rejected from my country and nearby region during RD, tho I don’t know anyone else who got waitlisted from my country.
I sent my LOCI 3 days after results and got reply next morning. Now, it is really busy time for them, so don’t worry about replies.
@cutecrab They’ll probably tell all the students whether they’re in or not by end of May I believe. The mid-april thing is super rare because they don’t really know how many kids are matriculating yet (since the deadline is May 1st) so I’m personally not going to hold out hope for a mid-April decision rn haha
I haven’t yet. Most enrollment deposits are non refundable so I’m not putting down any money until the end of April just in case. I’ve already mentally committed to a school though.
@cutecrab Not yet. She may take up a full-tuition waiver offer from Hollins, if Chicago doesn’t work out. She is also considering University of Amsterdam, which is very highly rated for her major (communication science). Got admission, awaiting scholarship results.
I have some good schools to go to and potentially some guaranteed transfers from top 15/20s so I made do that. Just depends…regardless, if UChicago doesn’t work out then I’ll either be transferring second semester of sophomore year.
Environmental Science and probably Statistics. Accepting UW Madison over UC Davis (better aid, cheaper tuition. I am an international student, so it’s pretty costly anyway)
@artloversplus I know. I didn’t mean transfer to UChicago. I meant just transfer in general. I have guaranteed transfers options to 2 schools of the same caliber, so I’ll probably agree to one of those:)
