Thanks a lot Rny2! Those stats are amazing, hopefully I’ll be able to make such an amazing team (hopefully I’ll get into Chicago in the first place lol).

God bless you Rny2 :D

Thanks for all the help and info

I’m very interested in programming and I have actually self tutored myself some C++ and Visual Basic…I want a small department and great undergrad focus and looks like Chicago totally fits the bill!

Btw I am an international and will be needing pretty decent aid so if you couple this with applying to a Computer science major you reckon I am going to be in a very competitive pool right?

International w/ aid, oh boy, good luck!!
I’ve also never heard of Chicago’s compsci program, but being a uninformed person, could you tell me about it?

Yeah, although I didn’t do team this year (I worked on ChoMUN, our collegiate conference), from what I could tell most people who wanted to attend a conference got the chance to do so. My roommate had a blast at Berkeley this year.

No problem! I’m personally a big fan of our CS department, and I’m working on expanding the community both in terms of depth and breadth, so it’s always refreshing to hear enthusiasm coming up. We’re supposed to have increased enrollment in first year CS major classes next year; add that to expanding the CSPP program, more programming/CS classes crossing over into other departments, and the establishment of the CCIB:FM program and you have a picture of a vibrant, growing department.

And you’re right about the international w/ financial aid pool being very competitive, although in my mind the Computer Science major would serve more to differentiate you than anything else. Especially not another Econ major, lol =D.

Although I would have to warn you, Visual Basic doesn’t get a lot of love around here xD.

Well, I covered the basics in my response to Darth Spawnus; is there anything specific you’re wondering about? Understandably, we don’t have the reputation of larger, tech/engineering-focused schools like MIT or Illinois, but we do good research and do the thing that Chicago does best: interdisciplinary study. For example, I’m currently working at the Computation Institute, which is a joint venture between Chicago and Argonne National Lab that applies CS to sociology, linguistics, public policy, and beyond.

Thanks Rny2 for the warning LOL

Well I actually stumbled across this programming thing entirely by accident
in my grade 8 computing we learned Visual basic and some elementary algorithmic operations and calculation but it exploded to a major passion after I started experimenting it with myself

Another thing I love is digital arts …does U Chicago have any minors or courses regarding media designing?

I know wanting aid puts me in a tough pool but I would still take my shot ;)

So I just got back from a great visit and an even better interview! I’m definitely applying EA, and am looking to major in Political Science or History (or both :P). I’m also very interested in the Chicago Careers in Journalism Program, as I want to be a journalist :).

Haha, yeah I know what you mean. For me, I reached a point where my mother was a CS person, my best friend was a CS person, and my girlfriend was a CS person. I was like, "hmm, maybe life is trying to tell me something here . . . "

I don’t know too much about the art scene; I know that we don’t have a media design minor but I’ve known a few people who took classes in Visual Art who used traditionally digital/design mediums. From a cursory examination of the catalog, I see ARTV 22501 Digital Imaging and ARTV 22502 Data and Algorithm in Art. Back in the CS department, I’ve heard very good reviews of CMSC 23700 Introduction to Computer Graphics and CMSC 23710 Scientific Visualization.

You can check the classes out yourself here: [The College Catalog 2011-2012 - University of Chicago Catalog](http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/)

Yeah, definitely go for it. Good luck, and hope to see you here in two years time :).

Hmm I think that will do

I also see there are courses in computer science regarding computer graphics (CMSC 23700. Introduction to Computer Graphics)…I am definitely excited!

Well yeah fingers crossed for the admission …I know I have yet long way to go…
Thanks for all the help Rny2 :)

If you saw “Inside Job:”

Henry Paulson Joins University of Chicago

[Henry Paulson Joins University of Chicago - Bloomberg](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

Henry M. Paulson Jr., former U.S. Treasury secretary, will join the University of Chicago as a senior fellow and start an independent institute located at the university.

Paulson, 65, also a former chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), will join the university’s Harris School of Public Policy Studies for a five-year appointment starting July 1, the university said today in a statement on its website.

He will also form the Paulson Institute to promote international engagement, with a special emphasis on relationships between the U.S. and China, Paulson said in a statement released on PR Newswire.

“Every global concern – economic, environmental or security-related – can be addressed more effectively when the U.S. and China work together,” Paulson said in the statement. “I look forward to devoting my time and energy to building the knowledge and relationships that can contribute to those solutions.”

Paulson attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and Harvard Business School in Boston. He served as Treasury secretary from 2006 to 2009 and chairman and CEO of New York-based Goldman Sachs from 1999 to 2006.

Paulson joins former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley as a fellow at the Harris School of Public Policy starting next month. Daley’s appointment was announced last month.

The University of Chicago was founded by John D. Rockefeller and opened in 1892. Its current and former faculty and alumni have won a total of 85 Nobel Prizes, including the Nobel Prize for Peace awarded in 2009 to President Barack Obama, who taught at the University of Chicago Law School for 12 years.

Got my interview on Friday. Does anyone who was already interviewed have any feedback/advice?

Don’t be stressed out, have fun, enjoy yourself :).

Rny2, which UChicago essay topic did you answer for your app?

I wrote on “How did you get caught?” I can post my essay up here if you want to see it; I doubt I have anything to lose from it but my honor xD.

Hahaha Rny2 give us a hint :P

Let’s just say it involved wifebeating* . . .

domestic abuse is not actually a topic to joke about.

I understand Rny2…coming from a 3rd world country I understand the magnitude of the situation and I hope you didn’t mind

Just wondering how bizarre this year’s essays might be

Okay, is anyone else freaked out by the essay topics this year?

yeah definitely freaked out but I think it’s just cause we gotta do them this year. i have an idea of what to do but i’ll probably change.

Yeah, it’s a lot more fun when you know someone else has to write them. I’m clueless on how to approach them. I think I’ll do the Play-Doh->Plato one.

Haha. It’s complete news to me that we only pick one. I thought we had to do at least three. I like the prompts a lot!
