is ea results december 16?
Mid-december, says the site. Anything beyond that is just speculation.
gearsstudio, I just looked at DS’ HS naviance for Chicago, and what you said is definitely true from his school. There are a large number of applications of clearly unqualified students. There are no acceptances below a 1400/1600 SAT, and plenty of kids who applied with scores between 1100 and 1300, and one with a score of 900! I find this surprising because the guidance department at DS’ school is excellent. Their advice has been great, and in line with what I’ve learned from CC. There is no way they would encourage these applications. DS is a very strong student, but he was told, tactfully but clearly, that certain schools were out of his range. They would have told these students in no uncertain terms that they were wasting their application fees.
Since anyone can apply for FREE if they have the intention to apply for financial aids, that alone contributes to more applicants. As long as they don’t mind writing the essays, there is nothing to lose I guess…
Nominal acceptance rate vs real acceptance rate eh?
The ‘real’ acceptance rate is probably still pretty low, I’d guess under 20%.
Are there a lot of kids that actually pay the application fee for UChicago? I mean, if they can just avoid it by applying for financial aid even if they know they are from a high-income family and might not get much, won’t they just do so?
Also, regarding financial aid for all schools in general, is it ever a bad idea not to apply? In my opinion, if there’s a chance for free money, why not take it? I have a friend who is not applying to UChicago but he told me he isn’t applying for financial aid at his schools. He just assumes he won’t be given very much due to his income bracket. I don’t know what the financial aid is like at his schools, but am I right in thinking this is pretty stupid of him?
Im not sure if UChicago is need blind… if they are, then you guys are right people should always ask for aid. if they aren’t need blind, then tbh, kids might want the slight advantage of having the money. Many schools like UChicago that only give grants, which is very few, aren’t able to be need blind, because some people HAVE to pay, and they need to make sure they have the money for grants so they don’t have to bring back loans. Im not sure which system is better, but i will tell you, i know so many people in college debt as adults, and it makes me think going to a grant only school is better, even if there are some kids who have money and have a better shot in getting in. Just my thoughts…
UChicago is need-blind for domestic students. For international applicants, they’re need-aware.
This is the most collegeconfidential question ever, but I asked my counselor to submit a first-quarter report on the Common App for one of my schools that required it and she submitted it to all my schools (maybe the Common App just does that by default, I dunno), including UChicago. I have a 4.0 UW up to this point, but just got a B+ in AP Stats first quarter. Do you guys think this will affect my chances at all? My class rank/GPA stays the same since my school only uses semester grades to calculate, but the drop probably looks bad to an adcom.
I’m ready to get made fun of for even asking but I can’t help myself. This whole process is making me neurotic.
@redandblack i feel ur pain - it honestly shouldn’t be a big deal if your everything is else is relatively perfect. i think the only scenario in which it looks bad is if you were taking a super easy senior courseload or if it drops your GPA below a 3.9
@redandblack not in the slightest. AP Stats isn’t really a class many colleges care about. If you were applying to Caltech, and got a B in say, Calculus, that might hurt. But this should be completely fine.
Did anyone choose an essay prompt from a previous year?
@kathkath42 Nah i did a historical mashup. “Andrew Jackson Pollock”… it was a lot of fun to write.
@kathkath42 I did. I did the one about why are you here and not somehwere else.
I used the ‘Find X’ prompt.
I chose the one about what’s in and what’s out.
I chose the Theme For English B quote by Langston Hughes. It was very open ended and let me be very creative
One reason not to apply for financial aid if none is expected is to avoid the hassle. If one has a complicated financial picture (multiple businesses involving multiple corporations, a not an uncommon occurrence in a high income family), there can be quite a lot of paperwork to fill out as each business/corporation has its own section.
@Lift35 I chose one from the same year! I did “Mind that does not stick”
