UChicago Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

Guys, my uncommon essay is like 900 words - is that too many? LOL

@MiniLion I think around 500 is okay but people with 1000+ words have gotten accepted so I wouldn’t sweat it

On the common app it says keep it around 500
But if it’s good it’s probably fine

@MiniLion People have gotten in with that many words, but its best to only have it that long if its necessary and you aren’t being redundant or unnecessarily wordy.

Hey guys! I also applied EA and I picked the past prompt about like how some words can’t be translated. I feel like it was a pretty decent essay?

My extended essay was 1200 words :expressionless:

Did anyone choose the paradox prompt?

UChicago opened up the supplemental checklist. For some reason, they say they haven’t received my SAT scores even though collegeboard sent them out of November 4th.

@anxioussenior1 I did the paradox prompt! Probably my favourite essay I’ve written during the admissions process (after Commonapp, of course). I love how there is enough space to be real and continue building yourself as a person but be quirky with the writing of it as well!

@Dilan412 it takes at least a week to two weeks for Collegeboard to send the scores, and another few days for the portal to update.

@galateaxx ikr! I could really express myself besides talking about something mundane like an accomplishment or my family or a dream of some sort.

@Dilan412 Woot! Finally! Had me nervously waiting for a few weeks, haha.
My rec letters are still missing. My teachers sent them via paper at the end of October; I guess UChicago received them but have not yet processed them?

Have any of you received a confirmation email saying that UChicago has received all of your application materials? I got an email saying that they’d let applicants know when they’ve received all of their materials, but I haven’t received said email yet. Being the obsessive person I am, it’s driving me a little crazy.

It says that the status of my official test scores have been received in July (form my June test that I automatically sent). I sent my September ACT scores, though??? Did they not upload yet, or something?

@HariboGoldBear yes there is a Why UChicago Essay

I think they recommended 500 words. But if you need 1000 words to explain, make those 1000 words meaningful.

@HariboGoldBear: The word limit is recommended 500-650 words. However, UChicago doesn’t have a word limit for their essays, which explains why applicants with essays well over 1000 words got in.
It doesn’t hurt to write more, but make sure you keep to the point so you don’t lose the readers

I was going to write my ‘Why UChicago’ essay in the form of a love letter, but then I did some research and turns out some guy already did that and UChicago released it as an example! And now I have no ideas, lol =/

@anxiousenior1 I placed my order on October 19th and Collegeboard said they sent it out on November 4th. That’s why I am concerned that there may be a problem. Also the other schools I applied to have all received my scores.

@Dilan412 Ohhh. I sent mine about 2 weeks ago and they showed up 2 days ago

@EvenfallsWolf international EA here too! I’m from Korea, and kinda worried about the reputation that Korean students may have…
