@palsun dude… its not a WL admit, for definite. Its a Z-list admit.
So as i said before, WL admittance hasnt started for UChic.
Z-list admits are offered a seat for the next years class 100%, happens very very very rarely, and is cuz of very specific and personal reasons unknown to us, but the adcom (maybe including the student and his/her/etc’s family).
Common reasons are need to take a gap year by themselves very strongly, thus pushing their WL eval out…and in fro the next years class (this doesnt mean they wouldve gotten a seat in this years class off the WL, but nothing definite for the contrary thought either), which they have to in this case, or for the app not fitting in this years ‘vision’ of the class.
Not so sure this characterization is accurate. At least at our school, the only kids who have been taken off the waitlist in the last few years have all been z-listed, and it typically is 3-4 kids per year. None of it has been driven by the applicant wanting the gap year. Rather, Chicago calls and says “we will let you in for next year’s class.”
@blackbeard Seems possible, maybe (mostly) a coincidence, but if its confirmed class of '24 seat its weirs and technically not a WL admit.
I dont think UChic Z-lists that often, as its meant to be exceedingly rare. But well i think it happens for reasons described before by me. I think theyre also meant to admit some off for '23, but its also next to none probabilistically.
I thought they take WLs off for this yrs class and thats what a WL means traditionally?
@TheGuy1 You go on so many of these threads and act like you know everything. You don’t and I honestly do not know why you believe you do. Have you worked in college admissions? Have you worked for UChicago? What makes you so qualified to speak on this topic with so much confidence?
@Pax - no need. I think my son got the same. Was just curious because your DC #2 got a bit more (of course tuition is higher now too!).
I suspect UChicago might have shifted funding more toward need-based beginning with the first class of ED (Class of '21). That’s my D’s class and the amount she received as a need-based grant turned out to be what we had been originally hoping for in terms of merit. She started as an EA applicant in order to be eligible for merit, was deferred, switched to ED2, then ended up with the same discount from tuition. She wasn’t hurt financially in the least even after switching to ED. This very likely represents a specific financial situation but it was a very nice outcome for her.
@philadelphia123 Honestly no experience but my own, and others anecdotes. I’m trying to help others diffuse situations by giving them as much as i know about the matter, and whatever Im unsure of as well.
Many people do find it useful a decent number of times, and simple pointers, anecdotes, stats, references help very much to at least the few reading it, who appreciate it. I’m happy for that.
Honestly I’m trying to help to the best of my knowledge and how much ever I can, knowing that IDK everything, someone will correct me, and I will respect that. Obviously this will be done in a discussion based way if you wouldve seen when I get some things wrong are am confused of certain things.
I got wait-listed with a 1400 SAT and 3’s on only 4 AP tests. 4.1 GPA and not even top in my class. Either my Essay’s were grandiose or I accidentally slipped through the cracks XD. My acceptance will be more surprising than the ending to Masters of War by Bob Dylan. I’ll keep my fingers crossed though! I am, however, eager to receive a response so I’m here to waste time.
@AdamVincent Nice! I too am waitlisted, with non top stats, i got a 1340 (which I didn’t submit), and 3’s so it’s good to see im not alone. Best of luck to you, and let’s hope the wait is short.
Re: NMF - I have heard early May as well (for the college sponsored awards through College Board). It would be nice if UChicago awarded additional merit aid for NMF. Do I understand correctly that they used to do this, but it is not standard anymore? So do some still get an additional NMF award from UChicago? So far my DD has received nothing from UChicago for NMF, and I’m guessing she shouldn’t expect anything.
Before you speak so declaratively make sure your facts are correct. As I’ve mentioned previously, I know at least 2 current students that were waitlisted and later admitted last year. I’m not sure why UC doesn’t acknowledge these as waitlist admits. It’s probably to discourage desperate parents from harassing the adcom.
@lilchaz - UChicago used to give out about $4k / year to NMF’s, inclusive of anything granted by NMSC. However, since switching to ED1/ED2, they seem to be reserving these merit funds for the non-binding admits (EA/RD). Last year there were NMF’s admitted ED who didn’t receive any NM funds at all. Having said that, each year brings a new and exciting chapter in UChicago’s merit aid history. Probably makes sense to stay tuned (but if admitted ED, don’t expect much if anything).
@JBStillFlying Isnt there always a risk of over-enrolling when they choose to admit slightly/way more than the class size?
The only thing theyre banking the extra admits on is the statistical facts on their enrollment rate.
I think that plan may fall flat since there’s no logical trend in it, but then again, isnt there no fixed class size to some colleges, where the numbers fluctuate by say +/- 50 every year or so?
