UChicago Class of 2025 -- Regular Decision

waitlist. Kinda sad. I got valedictorian today so hopefully it’ll help with my application once I tell them.

Does anyone know how many students got waitlisted or the percentage of students that get off?

Waitlisted, seems as if everyone got waitlisted. Kinda discouraging now - the odds of getting in now are probably very close to 0.

S21 was deferred EA and accepted today. We’re all in shock. We were completely expecting a rejection.

What are his stats and ECs?

Based on his stats, I don’t think it makes sense that he was accepted. It must have been based on other elements of the application, especially his writing.

1580 SAT, 3.6 UW GPA (4.2 W GPA but their school weights in a way that decreases GPA compared to other high schools). National Merit Finalist. 12 total AP classes. He didn’t submit a class rank, but he’s around the 75th percentile in rank so nowhere near top of the class. He probably had very good teacher rec letters from his junior year English and physics teachers.

His main ECs are marching band. He’s a 2-time All State French horn player. He’s also active in speech/debate and had several awards over the years but no major state or national awards. Other ECs include church choir and soccer referee. He had virtually no leadership posts (prepared speech lead this year was it). He had more depth than breadth in ECs. He’s also in the local youth orchestra this year (top ensemble in a major metro area).

He was very authentic in his application and really fits the “nerdy/quirky” persona that Chicago seems to like. His common app essay, Why Chicago essay, and Chicago supplemental essay were fantastic pieces of writing. He also submitted 5 pages of creative writing in the supplement and the optional video, in which he talked about his favorite t-shirt.

Writing is huge at UChicago, and the essays are central to an admissions decision. Congrats to your son on his admission!

denied. 4.0 UW. 36/1580. Great EC. That fun can die without me.

It’s totally unscientific poll time!

No matter what happens, we are rooting for you at CC!

Perhaps a dumb RD2/ED3 question: After May 1 (or perhaps after April 9 as students keep declining admit offers), does UChicago reach out to the candidates on the waitlist through one more round (RD2/ED3) or do the candidates get contacted on a rolling basis until the class is full?

Someone in Reddit said that if you send a LOCI sometimes they accept you right after that. Sometimes they call waitlisted candidates even before May 1 and tell that they will be accepted if they commit, just so they yield is good. This happened last year. Not sure if it will be true this year though! My D was waitlisted.

We were VERY surprised, too. Pleasant surprise.
