UChicago Dorm Help

Hi everyone, super excited to have been admitted to UChicago RD! After I commit, I’m going to have to choose my preferred dorms, and honestly, as an international student who does not know anyone accepted/attending UChicago, I have no idea what they are like. Could someone please give a me a brief description of some of the ones they know best (and some of the accurate stereotypes associated with them?) Thanks!

What in particular do you want in a dorm?

@HydeSnark I’ve eliminated a couple from my list (International House and Stony, too far from the main campus area for me) but am pretty unsure about the rest. Apart from having the typical love for learning of UChicago students, I also enjoy watching/participating in sports, so I would prefer a community that does not tend to be apathetic towards athletics/sport events. I also love many of UChicago’s unique traditions, and don’t have a preference for singles or doubles. Lastly, I’m a social person, though a bit shy at first, so I don’t think I would really enjoy a dispersive community.

@lacazette9 South maybe? It gets the widest swath of the UChicago community, I think. BJ and Snitchcock are the classic UChicago dorms, Max used to be the athlete/greek/people who like partying dorm and now it’s culture is kinda in flux, and North is now the athlete/greek/people who like partying dorm.

Here’s a whole page full of old opinions on the dorms, if you want to find pages and pages of people arguing about which dorm is best:

But, tbh, I’d choose on location/the building/the amenities more than anything. You can find all kinds of people in all the dorms, and, if you absolutely hate it, you aren’t stuck there and you can switch.

@HydeSnark just a quick thank you from a parent of an incoming first year that finds your posts very helpful.

@lacazette9 Have you looked at the Housing page on the school’s website? Each residence hall has a short video, a not-necessarily-accurate floor plan for singles and/or doubles as well as a list of what is in the room, and a description of each house and it’s activities. My daughter narrowed down her choices this way last year. Also, congratulations on being admitted! http://housing.uchicago.edu/houses_houses/

@HydeSnark @NorthLeftCoast thank you both!
