Congrats to all who were admitted!!! I truly love UChicago!

As a RD applicant, I beseech your kind advice on the word limit of UChicago essays. I’ve written a Sci-Fi for the main essay (tried to fit it to one of the prompts but may ultimately create my own) that is now 990ish words. I learned that UChicago didn’t have that “500 words suggested” last year, so I believe they may have received some long but poor essays which made them add that suggestion in. Although I’m confident in my essay, I’m concerned that they might still look down upon me for surpassing the word limit by almost 500 words. For admitted students, how long were your main essay, or the other two essays?

@ProximaCentauri My extended essay was over 1,100 words, my Why UChicago essay was almost 700, Optional Arts was 400. In addition to the common app essay I also had a written piece in the Additional Information section - overall it was quite a bit of writing yet it seemed to work in my favor!

There is no word limit; the 500 words is merely a general guideline. If you think your longer essay is an exception, by all means keep it!
My essays:
Uncommon essay: 496
Why U: about 350
Optional: 200-250 around

I was just contacted by a member of the UChicago alumni committee to schedule an interview even though I was deferred. I’m terrified because I do not know what to expect and this will be my first college interview! Has anyone had theirs yet/know what I should expect and prepare? thanks!
Be yourself and don’t worry about it. The interview will not eat you alive and only can help you.
However, be sure to have answers to all the items in your application, including your EC’s and Essays.
To revive this thread a bit, we should discuss the fact that UChicago’s decisions are coming out on Friday the 13th. I’m not superstitious, but who organized that??
