Pre-Law: Acceptance Rates - UC College

This is fascinating.

General thoughts?

Also interesting, US News 1997 College Rankings:

[1997 National Universities, 1-25: USNews - edu](1997 National Universities, 1-25: USNews - edu)

Heh back in 1997, UChicago was rated #3 for academic reputation, but #27 for student selectivity. UChicago admitted 71% of applicants, and only 86% of students graduated.

Interestingly, UChicago was #5 in the nation for alumni giving back then, at a 47% rate. That number’s around 40% today, and actually was in the low 30s for most of the 2000s.

Cue7, that’s very interesting data. Is it unfair to say there is little correlation between academic reputation and student selectivity then?

Interesting.

1) The academic reputation ranking wasn’t surprising since in 1995 the National Research Council ranked UChicago in the top 5 in the country (and there were only 5 schools in the top 5–not 10 tied for 5.) And back then U.S. News was probably surveying university presidents (not high school guidance counselors LOL!) University presidents were very aware of the NRC rankings, since it’s the federal government.

2) I wonder whether UChicago ever released updated figures for law school admittance.

3) Interesting that alumni giving rate has apparently dropped because I would have assumed it was lower back then.

For instance, in a speech John Boyer gave to the faculty in Fall 2011, he noted the “contribution rate to the senior class gift has increased from 21 percent in 1992 to 80 percent in 2008.”

4) Also, a reminder of the remarkable change in freshman retention rate–UChicago went from the lowest freshman retention rate among the top 15 schools in 1997–to the highest in 2011 (tied with Yale and Columbia).
