UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hello! In the “Uploading Materials” section on my UChicago account, do I need to upload everything (test scores, essays, recs, etc.) again? It says that my application was submitted, so is this sufficient? Thanks so much

Tanker999, we would prefer to receive a note from your counselor or a NACAC/College Board fee waiver to accompany this, but if the application fee is a hardship for you and you do not have access to either of these documents, a note explaining your circumstances will suffice.

cboggio-- no, this section is only for additional information you wish to submit but have not already submitted. We are in the middle of processing a huge amount of material, so don’t worry if your Chicago Account does not reflect all of your material as received yet; we will contact you if a required document is missing.

On Common App, the instructions for the extended essay simply said “a one- or two-page response,” so I wrote a two page essay. However, I later noticed on the UChicago website, under FAQs, the essay is supposed to stay around 500 words. My essay is about 650 words, significantly over the word limit, but still within the two page limit. Do you still suggest I shorten it?

Littlemonster613, 500 words is a suggestion, not a hard and fast rule; I would suggest making another pass over it to make sure you have edited all you can, and if you can shorten it, go for it; if not, 650 words is fine.

Hi Grace! I am wondering if it is okay that I write UChicago instead of the university of Chicago in my essay?

How accurately do the creative, fun supplements reflect UChicago in general? Is it really “where fun goes to die?”

oOBellaOo, yes, both UChicago and University of Chicago are appropriate nomenclature. We tend not to call ourselves U of Chicago, UofC, UC, or just Chicago, for what it’s worth.

Boredh12, I think one thing that our essay prompts indicate (and is certainly true from my experience) is that we’re not the kind of place who would tailgate a football game, but are the kind of place that would tailgate THIS kind of football game ([Monty Python Philosophy Football - YouTube](<a href=“Monty Python Philosophy Football - YouTube”>Monty Python Philosophy Football - YouTube)). Students are excited to be involved in everything from our Scavenger Hunt to Model United Nations, and, most importantly, aren’t afraid of talking about academic topics outside of class and learn (both their subject of interest, and subjects outside that area) for the sake of learning.

Hi Grace,

I mailed in my supplemental recommendations, proof of volunteering, and a program certificate as some supplemental materials to the University of Chicago. I was unaware I could do this online. Is it okay if I sent it by mail, even though you guys strongly encourage to submit them online if possible? I sent in my supplementals (not art-supplementals though) before I handed in my application, so I did not get my UChicago account until this morning. Should I re-submit my supplemental materials online, or is it okay that I just mailed it in?

AJB1993, it is perfectly acceptable to have mailed in those documents; many students do. You do not need to re-submit these documents.

Hi Grace. Does UChicago round A-s to As when evaluating GPA? I know Duke and Stanford does this. My GPA would rise a considerable amount!

Hi Garriff, no, we do not recalculate your GPA; many schools have different GPA scales and we are aware of differences between schools. We do, however, look at your transcript and not just your GPA-- we are much more interested in the types and rigor of the courses you have taken and your performance in those courses, and not just the final number at the top of your transcript as a result.

Hi Grace - How do the accounts get created? The application was submitted in the early hours of today.

Hello texaspg, our tech team creates the account for you and sends you login information for the account. They are usually created within 48 hours of submission although due to the high volume of traffic we are receiving at the moment please do not be alarmed if the account takes up to a week to be sent to you.

Do colleges prefer to see recommendation letters written by teachers in a class that you plan on majoring in?

For example, I want to major in Biology, but I was thinking of asking my APUSH teacher for a letter of recommendation because I’ve had her for two years in class and tennis. Is it better for me to get one from a science teacher?

Also, I was thinking of getting one from my orchestra conductor in an orchestra that I do out of school. It’s pretty competitive and I really enjoy it AND he’s one of my favorite people ever…haha. So I wanted to get one from him, but my guidance counselor said it would be better to get them from teachers. So what are peoples thoughts on that?

thanks in advance :)

Dear UChicago,
I submitted my application without the supplement. will common app allow me to submit the supplement after today since I got an email saying the EA deadline is pushed back until the 7th?

Will the deadline extension for east-coasters cause decisions to be delayed?

Hi Grace,

I discovered 2 errors in my optional essay. When I was referring to a movie, I said X movie by Y director…but I accidentally wrote the author’s name (of the book from which the movie is based on) by accident instead of the director’s name. I also misspelled a name later on in the essay (not badly of course).

Is this worth contacting the admissions office, or will it just give the reader a chuckle if they realize the mistake?

I sent in my application yesterday and received login information. After you log in, there is also a an option to reattach all 3 essays from the supplement section. Should I maybe attach the corrected version here?

Thanks!

Hi Grace-

on the email I received today it said:
“Supplemental materials can be submitted through your Portfolio on the UChicago Account through November 15th.”

Does this only apply to east coast or for EA applicants in general? I have submitted my app but I haven’t submitted the supplement yet because I am working on the essays. They are decent but I can make them a whole lot better if I had a few more days.

So, what I’m asking is, if I have already submitted my app, can I submit my supplement later even though im midwestern?

Thanks in advance!
